Happy Easter everyone! Not everyone celebrates Easter as a religious holiday and children remember it mainly for the Easter bunny and Easter egg hunts. I know I looked forward to it as a child because my mum would mount an indoor Easter egg hunt for us kids after Easter Mass. She would hide chocolate Easter eggs, and the real treasures were the special large sugar eggs that you could crack open to find more little candies inside. Our Easter tradition hardly varied for many years. We would all get up early and get into our Sunday best and go to church. After church, we would all drive down to the Magnolia ice cream plant and Papa would buy a 5-quart Easter ice cream cake. Then home for the Easter egg hunt while Mama prepared dinner. When we were older, Papa would drop us off at home and then pick up the ice cream cake, which we waited for, excited to see what design he would bring. My brothers were excited too about the dry ice that was packed around the cake, because then, they could fill a tub of water in the bathroom, living room, or carport, and drop the dry ice into it to create a cool fog that spilled over into the rest of the house. The best thing about it was that it was SOLID ice cream, with the most delicious creamy frosting (unlike our DQ cakes which have a cake layer under the ice cream). We would have a different design each year, but on most years we would have either a bouquet of ice cream Easter lilies and daisies or a solid ice cream Easter bunny and eggs. Each of the 4 of us (my sister had not yet been born, and until she was old enough to pick for herself, she’d just have whatever we served on her plate) would pick our choice but still get whatever my mum put on our plates if she was the one serving. Of course, the ice cream cake was the pièce du resistance, after a glorious Easter ham that mama had ironed with sugar and glazed pineapple. I don’t remember when the tradition stopped for us, because after High School, I left home and hardly visited. When the grandchildren came, however, the Easter egg hunts resumed and I know my children, nephews, and nieces, have as fond memories of Easter Sunday at Mama’s as I do. ~cpl

CBC Short Story Prize: 2015 longlist

The next winner of the CBC Short Story Prize will be chosen from the list of 26 writers below.

Each one has a shot of winning the 2015 Grand Prize: $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts, publication in Air Canada’s enRoute magazine and a ten-day writing residency at The Banff Centre. Four others will be named runners-up and will walk away with $1,000 each.

Brent MacLaine Featured Reader at April 13Haviland Club Open Mic

April is Poetry Month across Canada, a fitting time to have one of PEI’s most esteemed poets as featured reader at the Haviland Club’s Open Mic on April 13.

Brent MacLaine is Professor of English and a 3M Teaching Fellow at the University of Prince Edward Island where he teaches twentieth-century literature. He was born and grew up in Rice Point, to which he returned in 1991 after teaching at universities in Vancouver, Edmonton, China, and Singapore. In addition to numerous articles on modern literature and the literature of Atlantic Canada, he has published four volumes of poetry: Wind and Root (Vehicule 2000); These Fields Were Rivers (Goose Lane 2004); Athena Becomes a Swallow and Other Voices from The Odyssey (Goose Lane 2009); and Shades of Green (Acorn 2008), which won both the Atlantic Poetry Prize and the Prince Edward Island Book of the Year Award. He has also edited with Hugh MacDonald Landmarks: an Anthology of New Atlantic Canadian Poetry of the Land (Acorn 2001). His fifth collection, A Promontory View, is forthcoming this year.

Everyone is welcome. Admission is free or by donation. Readers can sign up at 7 p.m. to read their own poetry or prose, for up to five minutes, to a friendly audience.

Roger Gordon’s Library Tour

MARCH-APRIL: Roger Gordon, Stratford resident and former Dean of Science at UPEI, is touring PEI’s libraries with Starting to Frame – A Memoir.

Starting to Frame describes the author’s life growing up in a working class home in Sheffield, England, during the 1940s to 60s. Among the social stigmas of the era that he had to deal with were divorce, marital infidelity, and mental illness. It is a story of resiliency that carries an inspirational tone. Roger uses humor, nostalgia, and “coming of age” motifs to provide a light-hearted counterpoint to the more dramatic elements within his childhood and early adulthood.

The author’s library tour, which will culminate mid-April, will encompass six libraries – Stratford, Montague, Charlottetown, Summerside, O’Leary, and Cornwall. At each location, Roger will discuss the book, read from it, and carry out book signings.

Food and Poetry—Delicious Theme for April Poetry Month

This year The League of Canadian Poets is encouraging poets and hosts to explore and savour the theme of Food & Poetry. Inspired by Rachel Rose’s inaugural speech as Vancouver’s Poet Laureate, the League is asking poets to investigate the ways in which “food is personal, political, sensual and powerful”. Food nourishes, grounds and connects us, much like poetry. Without food as without poetry, we go hungry. There is so much that can be spoken of and written about food and one’s experience with it.

Does your interest lie in holistic nutrition and the poetics of how food can heal, or the problematic politics of food security? Why not plan a reading over brunch with friends or a writing workshop exploring how food speaks to home? However your creative juices flow, marinate in this theme and let it nourish you and others with your delicious work.

At the Haviland Club Open Mic, April 13, you are invited to read your poems or prose on the theme of food, and/or enjoy being read to.

A Celebration of Courage and Tenacity

You’re invited to submit your story! We are compiling a book of inspirational, short stories/poems called: A Celebration of Courage and Tenacity. It is a dynamic compilation of short stories about those who have triumphed over traumatic brain injury. We are honoring survivors of brain injury for their strength of will, for believing in themselves, for overcoming adversity, and standing up for themselves or others. It is meant to move you to laugh, to cry, to ponder possibilities, to dream, and to make those dreams a reality.

We are inviting survivors of brain injury and family to submit their stories/poems. Our goal is to have the book represent a wide range of experience and inspiration. Surviving the physical challenges of brain injury is the first step of a lifelong journey of adjustment and accommodation. Re-establishing lives transformed by brain injury requires foresight, fortitude, and unflagging courage. This book will be a celebration of those journeys.

Charting new territory, brain injury has been characterized as the “Silent Epidemic.” It has earned that distinction in part because survivors tend to withdraw from society. This book ends the silence and inspires others to take charge of their lives.

CARGO Literary Journal

Cargo is a nonfiction journal, and we are looking for pieces with a strong narrative and interior journey, such as immersion reportage. Please submit one essay or up to five poems. We will consider prose poems, lists, and interesting personal notes providing they meet our guidelines, so feel free to take risks with form. We would also like to publish author interviews.

Ticket to Write 2015

The competition is for one-act stage plays about The Beatles. The plays should last about 40 – 45 minutes. We plan to stage the three plays selected in Liverpool later in the year over two nights as in 2014. The audience votes will still be included in the overall choice of the winner of the £150 prize

The plays can feature any aspect of The Beatles – their music, work or lives. They can even be inspired by a song or song-title.

The 40- 45 minute plays must be able to be performed with a maximum of four actors. A play can have more than four characters provided that multi-roling with the maximum of four is practical.

The Weather

For an upcoming issue, Creative Nonfiction is seeking new essays about THE WEATHER. We’re not just making idle chit-chat; the weather affects us all, and talking about the weather is a fundamental human experience. Now, as we confront our changing climate, talking about the weather may be more important than ever.

Send us your true stories—personal, historical, reported—about fog, drought, flooding, tornado-chasing, blizzards, hurricanes, hail the size of golfballs, or whatever’s happening where you are. We’re looking for well-crafted essays that will change the way we see the world around us.

Creative Nonfiction editors will award $1,000 for Best Essay and $500 for runner-up. All essays will be considered for publication in a special “Weather” issue of the magazine.

Guidelines: Essays must be previously unpublished and no longer than 4,000 words. The 2015 Pen Parentis Writing Fellowship For New Parents

In addition to a full year of promotion and the publication of the winning story by Brain/Child Magazine, a $1000 prize will be presented to the new Pen Parentis Writing Fellow at a public reading of the winning work in Manhattan on Tuesday, September 14th, 2015. 12th Annual Screenwriting Challenge

The 12th Annual Screenwriting Challenge is a competition open to screenwriters around the world. There are 3 rounds of competition. In the 1st Round (April 24 – May 2), writers are placed randomly in heats and are assigned a genre, subject, and character assignment (see examples of past assignments here). Writers have 8 days to write an original short screenplay no longer than 12 pages. The judges choose a top 5 in each heat to advance to the 2nd Round (June 18-21) where writers receive new assignments, only this time they have just 3 days to write an 8 page (maximum) short screenplay. Judges choose a top 25 from the 2nd Round to advance to the 3rd and final round of the competition where writers are challenged to write a 5 page (maximum) screenplay in just 24 hours (July 24-25). 2015 San Francisco Book Festival Call for Entries

SAN FRANCISCO _ The 2015 San Francisco Book Festival has issued a call for entries to its annual program celebrating the best books of the spring.

The San Francisco Book Festival will consider non-fiction, fiction, biography/autobiography, children’s books, compilations/anthologies, young adult, how-to, cookbooks, science fiction, business, history, wild card, gay, photography/art, poetry, unpublished, technology and spiritual/religious works. There is no date of publication restriction.

Our grand prize for the 2015 San Francisco Book Festival winner is $1500 cash appearance fee and a flight to San Francisco for our gala awards ceremony in May, 2015. Exact date TBD.

Submitted works will be judged by a panel of industry experts using the following criteria:

1) General excellence and the author’s passion for telling a good story.

Great Lakes Commonwealth of Letters, along with the Cascade Writers’ Group, invites authors from across the United States to participate in the 2015 writing competition for Imagine This! An ArtPrize Anthology. This book is a collection of poems, short stories, and personal essays published every year during ArtPrize, an internationally-renowned art competition held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The 2015 Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize Competition

The University of Pittsburgh Press announces the Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize for a first full-length book of poems. Named after the first director of the Press, the prize carries a cash award of $5,000 and publication by the University of Pittsburgh Press in the Pitt Poetry Series under its standard royalty contract. The winner will be announced in the fall; no information about the winner will be released before the fall announcement. The Starrett Prize is our only venue for first-book poetry manuscripts. The volume of manuscripts received prevents the Press from offering critiques or entering into correspondence about manuscripts other than the one chosen for publication. Please do not call or e-mail the press.

The award is open to any poet writing in English who has not had a full-length book of poetry published previously. We define “full-length book” as a volume of 48 or more pages published in an edition of 750 or more copies. Books whose publication costs have been borne by their authors are excluded from this definition. University of Pittsburgh employees, former employees, current students and those who have been students within the last three years are not eligible for the award.

Entries are now open for the 2015 ABR Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize. The 2015 Jolley Prize is worth a total of $8,000, with a first prize of $5,000 and supplementary prizes of $2,000 and $1,000. Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction

The Malahat Review, Canada’s premier literary magazine, invites emerging short-story writers from Canada and abroad to enter the Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction.

The We Need Diverse Books Short Story Contest

We Need Diverse Books (“WNDB”) is a grassroots organization created to address the lack of diverse, non-majority narratives in children’s literature. The anthology will be in memory of Walter Dean Myers and it will be inspired by his quote: “Once I began to read, I began to exist.” Every new story contribution to this anthology will be by a diverse author.

The PEN International/New Voices Award 2015 is open for submissions until May 22.

The PEN International/New Voices Award encourages new writing in the countries in which we operate, and provides a much needed space for young and unpublished writers to promote their work. The award actively encourages entries from diverse linguistic regions and communities.

Before PEN International was established in 1921 its founder, C. A. Dawson Scott, set up the Tomorrow Club as a space for aspiring writers to network with established authors; in 1928 Herman Ould, International Secretary, felt strongly that it was important for PEN to maintain focus on helping emerging writers, and so established the first ‘Young PEN’ chapter.

The PEN International/New Voices Award builds on these ideas, simultaneously reconnecting with our past and moving into the future. The award is open to unpublished writers aged 18-30. The young writers must be nominated by their local PEN Centre: PEN International cannot receive entries directly from candidates.

The Peter Hinchcliffe Fiction Award

Winning story: $1000

This contest, is named in honour of Peter Hinchcliffe, who was instrumental in the founding of the magazine and has made an impact in the lives of many students in his longstanding role as lecturer at St. Jerome’s University.

The $1000 top prize will be awarded for a work of short fiction by a Canadian (citizen or resident) writer who has not yet published a first novel or short story collection. Though there is only one top prize, all submissions will be considered for paid publication ($250) in the magazine. All submissions will be judged blind.

Humour Verse Competition

Welcome to our Humour Verse Competition! Now in its fifth year. There is a scarcity of humour verse competitions with worthwhile prize money, even though there are huge numbers of people who like to write and read funny poems. So we at Flash 500 are rather proud of this one, which has grown into a must-enter competition for writers of humour verse.

What are we looking for? Any form of humour will be accepted, in any style, but the content must be original and it has to make us smile. Anything from a limerick to a poem of 32 lines in length is accepted.

The competition will be run quarterly with closing dates matching the Flash 500 competition: 31st March, 30th June, 30th September and 31st December. The results will be announced within six weeks of closing date and the three winning entries each quarter will be published on this website.

Neil Postman Award for Metaphor

Although primarily known as an educationist and a media critic, Neil Postman was, at his core, a “noticer”—and he particularly noticed what we do with metaphor and how metaphor shapes and creates our cognitive world. Postman maintained that words (and words, in truth, are metaphors) are as much the driver of reality as they are the vehicle. Consequently, metaphor was not a subject to be relegated and limited to high school poetry units wherein a teacher drones on about the difference between “like” and “as” and considers the job finished. For Postman, the study of metaphor was unending and metaphors were as crucial as they were omnipresent; they served to give form to and dictate experience.

In honor and remembrance of Neil Postman, who died on October 5, 2003, we have established the Neil Postman Award for Metaphor. The motivation for the award is simple and two-fold: To reward a given writer for his or her use of metaphor, and to celebrate (and hopefully propagate) Postman’s work and the typographical mind.

Each spring the editors will choose one poem from all of the submissions received by Rattle during the previous year. The author of the chosen poem will receive $500. Hillerman Prize

Named after New Mexico’s best known mystery author, the Tony Hillerman Prize competition is open to any professional or non-professional writer who has never been the author of a published mystery, or under contract with a publisher for publication of a mystery. Murder or another serious crime or crimes must be at the heart of the story, with the emphasis on the solution rather than the details of the crime.

Only one manuscript entry is permitted per writer. All entries must be received or postmarked no later than June 1 of the given year. All manuscripts submitted: a) must be original works of book length (no less than 220 typewritten pages or approximately 60,000 words) written in the English language by the contestants; b) must not violate the rights of any third party, and c) must generally follow the guidelines.

Ekphrasis is a poetry journal looking for well-crafted poems, the main content of which addresses individual works from any artistic genre. Please identify the specific work that is the focus of your poem. Acceptable ekphrastic verse transcends mere description: it stands as transformative critical statement, an original gloss on the individual art piece it addresses.

All poems published in Ekphrasis within a given calendar year will be considered for the Ekphrasis Prize for Poetry.

GLENNA LUSCHEI PRIZE FOR AFRICAN POETRY

Under the auspices of the African Poetry Book Fund and in partnership with the literary journal, Prairie Schooner, is an annual award of USD $5,000. Named for the literary philanthropist Glenna Luschei, this Pan African Poetry Prize is the only one of its kind in the world and was established to promote African poetry written in English or in translation and to recognize a significant book published each year by an African poet.

Each year, the prize will be judged by an internationally renowned poet. This judge for the inaugural prize is Nigerian poet and novelist Chris Abani.

Diana Woods Memorial (DWM) Award

Creative nonfiction authors are invited to submit an essay of up to 5,000 words on the subject of their choice to be considered for the Diana Woods Memorial (DWM) Award in creative nonfiction. Winners will receive $250 and their work will be featured in the next issue of Lunch Ticket. Each award recipient must submit a 100-word biography, current photo, and send a brief note of thanks to the Woods’ family.

On this writing community all posts receive feedback from writers and readers. Feedback includes a detailed comment on the posted work and a rating. The site uses a six star ratings scale with “1” being the worst and “6” being the best.
