Like any other learned skill, writing requires education, be it formal or informal. The good thing is, there are millions of literary works out there to provide models for writing. The bad thing is, not all the writing out there is worthy of modeling. Moreover, with the evolution of writing, world literature has progressed from purely oral traditions to largely written traditions. More significant, yet, is the development of digital forms and a resurgence of oral traditions also in some technological format, albeit alternative forms of literature presented in traditional print formats. The proliferation of literature can be attributed to the ease with which writers of any ilk at any level of expertise (or, sadly, the lack thereof) can publish their own works. Gone are the times when all published literature had to go through a rigorous selection process and extensive editing prior to its release to the reading public. As a result, some literature—nay—a lot of literature gets out there with great need of heavy editing and revision. While there might be some gems—because, indeed, there are excellent writers who remain undiscovered by large publishing houses—there are more models of what literature should not be. While I might have stronger opinions I might express in more acerbic language, I would rather exhort fellow writers to exercise greater care in the production of their works prior to releasing them to the public. As writers, we all have a responsibility to ensure we provide models worthy of emulation. Hence, all care must be taken to produce work that is well-written, with all that term implies. At the very least, the spelling and grammar must be impeccable, because, at the very least, your readers will remember and imitate your spelling and well-constructed sentences, if nothing else. That alone is probably worth the read.

The Monthly Writing Contest
Here at Writing Maps we believe good writing should be encouraged, cherished, shared, and most importantly, published.
We hold a monthly Writing Maps Writing Contest to coincide with the launch each month of a new Writing Map product. We challenge you to write and share a 150-word piece in response to our Prompt of the Month.
Each month’s two winning entries will be published in The A3 Review, the new Writing Maps Journal, a fold-out literary magazine to be published every six months. The first issue appeared in September 2014. Winning entries will also receive free Writing Maps and contributor copies of The A3 Review.

2017 Wells Festival of Literature Competitions

The Griffin Poetry Prize
- The Griffin Poetry Prize, valued at C$130,000, is awarded annually in two categories – International and Canadian. Each prize is worth C$65,000.
- In each category, the prize is for the best collection of poetry in English published during the preceding year. One prize goes to a living Canadian poet or translator, the other to a living poet or translator from any country, which may include Canada.
- Translations are assessed for their quality as poetry in English; the focus is on the achievement of the translator.
- Should a prize-winning book be a translation from a living poet, the prize is awarded 60% to the translator and 40% to the original poet. If the original poet is dead, but his/her work is within copyright, 40% of the prize is given to the original poet’s estate. Otherwise, the disbursement of that portion of the prize is left to the discretion of the judges.

The 2018 Saturday Evening Post Great American Fiction Contest is underway!
In its nearly two centuries of existence, The Saturday Evening Post has published short fiction by a who’s who of great American authors, including Ray Bradbury, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Louis L’Amour, Sinclair Lewis, Jack London, Joyce Carol Oates, Edgar Allan Poe, Anne Tyler, and Kurt Vonnegut, among so many others.
Now you have the opportunity to join our illustrious lineup by entering The Saturday Evening Post’s Sixth Annual Great American Fiction Contest.
“This contest is a tribute to the Post’s legacy of featuring the most renowned American fiction writers,” says Steven Slon, editorial director and associate publisher for The Saturday Evening Post. “Our goal is to continue the tradition of finding and featuring compelling stories and the authors behind them.”

The Stringybark ‘Dog Eat Dog’ Award 2017
Following on from our popular thematic Stringybark Erotic Fiction Award 2015 where the story related to the name of a cocktail, this award gives writers free-rein to dance with the Devil and break the ground rules of good writing by submitting a story which contains a common cliché and is titled that cliché. There are some great lists of clichés on the web to whet your appetite. For example:

NOTE: This competition is not to see how many clichés you can shoehorn into your story. Rather it is to inspire you to write a great story. Although primarily known as an educationist and a media critic, Neil Postman was, at his core, a “noticer”—and he particularly noticed what we do with metaphor and how metaphor shapes and creates our cognitive world. Postman maintained that words (and words, in truth, are metaphors) are as much the driver of reality as they are the vehicle. Consequently, metaphor was not a subject to be relegated and limited to high school poetry units wherein a teacher drones on about the difference between “like” and “as” and considers the job finished. For Postman, the study of metaphor was unending and metaphors were as crucial as they were omnipresent; they served to give form to and dictate experience.
In honor and remembrance of Neil Postman, who died on October 5, 2003, we have established the Neil Postman Award for Metaphor. The motivation for the award is simple and two-fold: To reward a given writer for his or her use of metaphor, and to celebrate (and hopefully propagate) Postman’s work and the typographical mind.
Each spring the editors will choose one poem from all of the submissions received by Rattle during the previous year. The author of the chosen poem will receive $500. Port Medway Readers’ Festival
The Port Medway Readers’ Festival is a literary festival that takes place in Port Medway, Nova Scotia, during July and August.
Tickets are $20.00 per person per event. They include a reading at the Old Meeting House at 7 PM, followed by a book signing, sandwiches, and refreshments at the fire hall. These may be purchased by downloading and mailing our ticketing form (click HERE to download or print), or in person at one of our ticketing locations:

The Independent Authors Conference is taking place November 3rd-5th, 2017 in the Sonesta hotel in the heart of downtown Philadelphia.
The Independent Authors Conference is a skills-building educational weekend event for 500 independent authors. Our goal is to bring together bright minds to lead sessions that will improve skills, foster learning, and inspire creativity.
