It’s the night of the annual Academy Awards and news agencies have predicted there will be many politically-colored speeches. In truth, there is so much to be angry about and, like love, anger is another emotion that evokes powerful responses. Many brilliant works of literature must have been written from a perspective of anger—writers expressing vehement emotions against outrageous situations. While the actual writing might not stem directly from anger, the seed of that writing might stem from anger at a particular situation which leads to a shocking or disturbing exposé, which, in turn, presents biting criticism or radical ideas that might or might not have been meant to instigate change. Such is the seed of writing that carries powerful social messages. Take for instance Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s works. Solzhenitsyn was surely disgusted and angry at the atrocities being committed in his country and went on to write several brilliant novels, such as The Gulag Archipelago, First Circle, and Cancer Ward, and the play One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Harriet Beecher Stowe was angry, as well, at slavery and wrote the great novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. I’m certain there are hundreds, if not thousands, of literary works examining, criticizing, and even ridiculing outrageous situations, and for each I name, I would be leaving out a dozen more. Writing from anger raises our adrenaline levels and makes us look at things more critically, as opposed to writing from love, which makes us look at things more kindly. Possibly the best outcome of writing from anger is literature that is intellectually stimulating, provocative, and reformative, because this kind of writing opens eyes and minds, takes readers by the scruff of the neck and rubs their faces in issues requiring attention. It’s the kind of writing that makes people want to step outside their boundaries and change the world.

Happy writing!

ARCHETYPES, CHARACTERS & YOU
A Workshop with Donna Morrissey, International Award Winning Author
Are you or your character smiling, even when things aren’t good? Trust even when trust isn’t warranted? Maintain hope when suddenly tossed into situations of conflict, judgment, violence?

Learn how the Innocent Archetype affects ourselves and our characters’ thinking and behaviours. We all begin in innocence. We all experience the fall from innocence which then activates other behaviours, oftentimes denial that may control us with its guilt or shame.

This intensive two-day workshop will teach us to UNDERSTAND the people in our lives, and/or create AUTHENTIC fiction/memoir characters by:

– Identifying 12 Personality Archetypes: Innocent; Orphan; Warrior; Caregiver; Seeker; Destroyer; Lover; Creator; Ruler; Sage; Magician; Fool.

– Identifying or creating situations where one or more of those Archetypes are impacting our thinking or those of our characters, and what their subsequent behaviours might be.

– Recognize the shadow side of those Archetypes and how it carries itself out in our behaviours or those of our characters.

– Learn how to bring about the healing of ourselves or our characters as we Prepare, Take, and Return from the Hero’s Journey.

Designed for: Memoir, fiction, and non-writers. Beginners welcome!

Day 1: Learning about Character, and the hero’s journey. Understanding Archetypes: Innocent; Orphan; Warrior; Caregiver.
Day 2: Understanding 8 remaining Archetypes and how they influence our own personality, and/or fictitious/memoir Characters.

Dates: March 4 and 5, 10:00–3:30 pm each day
Location: Haviland Club in Charlottetown (at the corner of Water and Haviland).

Cost:

Two days: $195.00

Submissions are due by May 31.

Wundor Short Fiction Contest 2017

Novellas, Short Stories and Flash Fiction

At Wundor we plan to champion interesting, unusual fiction in all of its forms. Brevity can be one of literature’s great virtues, and we do not believe in filling out short stories into novella form if they are supposed to be short stories, or lengthening a novella to try to make a novel, when the story suits the novella form just fine.

Whether you have a single piece of work, a collection of pieces or a brilliant novella on your hands, we would like to read it. The only stipulation is that the sum total word count of your submission should fall between 5,000 and 45,000 words.

Neil Postman Award for Metaphor

Rolling Deadline
(no fee)

Although primarily known as an educationist and a media critic, Neil Postman was, at his core, a “noticer”—and he particularly noticed what we do with metaphor and how metaphor shapes and creates our cognitive world. Postman maintained that words (and words, in truth, are metaphors) are as much the driver of reality as they are the vehicle. Consequently, metaphor was not a subject to be relegated and limited to high school poetry units wherein a teacher drones on about the difference between “like” and “as” and considers the job finished. For Postman, the study of metaphor was unending and metaphors were as crucial as they were omnipresent; they served to give form to and dictate experience.

In honor and remembrance of Neil Postman, who died on October 5, 2003, we have established the Neil Postman Award for Metaphor. The motivation for the award is simple and two-fold: To reward a given writer for his or her use of metaphor, and to celebrate (and hopefully propagate) Postman’s work and the typographical mind.

Each spring the editors will choose one poem from all of the submissions received by Rattle during the previous year. The author of the chosen poem will receive $500. There are no entry fees or special submission guidelines. Send up to 5 unpublished poems plus a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) to: Rattle, 12411 Ventura Boulevard, Studio City, CA 91604. To browse previous winners, and for information on how to submit electronically, visit our website: http://www.rattle.com/poetry/extras/postman/
