It is the first of March and in 21 days, it will officially be Spring. There are many who rejoice because it will be the end of a very cold and snowy winter—we certainly got more snow in the past month than we did since the start of Winter, and definitely more snow than we got last year. Not only was there an unusual amount of snowfall, but temperatures reached record lows. Hopefully, the weather inspired greater creativity, but if not, then surely Spring will bring about many inspirational moments. It is the season of birth and rebirth, so I hope you find birth and rebirth in your writing as well.

Galleon III Now Available at The Bookmark

It contains poetry, prose and reviews by a variety of people, including PEI writers: Jeff Bursey, Beth Janzen, Steve Mayoff, Malcolm Murray and J.J. Steinfeld. Prince Edward Island Folk Songbook launch at Confederation Centre Public Library
Teresa Doyle and Wendy Jones will launch their Prince Edward Island Folk Songbook at 2 pm on March 1 at the Confederation Centre Public Library. The book is a follow-up to the website Jones and Doyle launched this summer. The folk songbook and peifolksongs.com website are anthologies celebrating 150 years of folk music in PEI.
Teresa and her son Patrick Bunsten will sing songs from the book at the launch, as will some members of the Children of Bedlamb Chorus who have trained and performed with Teresa.
“We’re proud to launch the printed copy of Prince Edward Island Folk songs,” says Jones. “Teresa has spent a lifetime collecting and performing traditional Scottish and Irish folk songs and making sure new generations can enjoy them through her Boys and Girls of Bedlamb Chorus, many of the songs in the book are from her collection. Getting permission to include songs by such esteemed folk artists as Lennie Gallant, Margie Carmichael, Catherine MacLellan, Ashley Condon, Meaghan Blanchard, and Eddy Quinn as well as many other well-known and respected Island singer/songwriters was great. It is a privilege to include works that will become traditional folk music for future generations.”
In addition to PEI 2014, the PEI Coop Council sponsored the project. They will be selling copies of the Folk Songbook through Island Credit Unions and donating profits to Camp Gencheff.
“The first song I ever learned was a little ditty to the tune of The Irish Washer Woman. “Have you ever been to an Irishman’s shanty where water is scare and whiskey is plenty? A two legged stool, a table to match, a string on the door instead of a latch,” Teresa says in the book’s Forward. “My Dad had his work cut out for him teaching a four year old that mouthful. Growing up in rural Prince Edward Island the fiddle was king. There really wasn’t a strong folksong tradition. Our house attracted a lot of fiddlers. My father sang or ‘jigged’ fiddle tunes and the Hughes, The Chaissons and other fiddlers would drop by to trade tunes with my Dad. Singers at local concerts mostly sang country music and some Irish pub songs.

Haviland Club Open Mic
Ivy Wigmore and Douglas Malcolm, will be featured readers at the Haviland Club Open Mic on Monday, March 9 at 7 p.m.
Well-known to Buzz readers as a regular contributor, Ivy Wigmore’s day job is content editor on WhatIs.com, an online tech encyclopedia. She writes for The Buzz as the much-needed antidote to writing about enterprise software. Art? Music? Theatre? Yes, please. Ivy’s ongoing free-time projects include a book of Island ghost stories, a book of personal essays, and a motley assortment of other half-finished endeavors. Her stock line is that throughout her career she’s written about everything from quantum theory to a bicycling bear. Along the way, she’s “published some poetry and a couple of short stories, and won a few PEI Literary awards.”
Douglas Malcolm has won the Milton Acorn Prize for Poetry and the Guardian Feature Article Award. He has published his poetry in various small magazines and anthologies and has read his poems on Atlantic regional CBC. He also has published a wide variety of other material including book reviews, feature articles, and scholarly work. Douglas works for DeltaWare Systems, a PEI IT company. He and his wife Ivy live in Charlottetown a block-and-a-half from the (former) hospital where she was born and about a mile up the road from the house where she and her many siblings grew up.
Guest host will be Orysia Dawydiak, novelist, children’s author, and non-fiction writer, as well as PEI’s most recent recipient of the Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Literary Arts. She invites those who like to be read to, and/or wish to read from their own writing, to attend.
Everyone is welcome. Admission is free or by donation. Readers can sign up at 7 p.m. to read their own poetry or prose, for up to five minutes, to a friendly audience.

A Celebration of Courage and Tenacity
You’re invited to submit your story! We are compiling a book of inspirational, short stories/poems called: A Celebration of Courage and Tenacity. It is a dynamic compilation of short stories about those who have triumphed over traumatic brain injury. We are honoring survivors of brain injury for their strength of will, for believing in themselves, for overcoming adversity, and standing up for themselves or others. It is meant to move you to laugh, to cry, to ponder possibilities, to dream, and to make those dreams a reality.
We are inviting survivors of brain injury and family to submit their stories/poems. Our goal is to have the book represent a wide range of experience and inspiration. Surviving the physical challenges of brain injury is the first step of a lifelong journey of adjustment and accommodation. Re-establishing lives transformed by brain injury requires foresight, fortitude, and unflagging courage. This book will be a celebration of those journeys.
Charting new territory, brain injury has been characterized as the “Silent Epidemic.” It has earned that distinction in part because survivors tend to withdraw from society. This book ends the silence and inspires others to take charge of their lives.

42 Miles Press Poetry Award

The 42 Miles Press Poetry Award is being created in an effort to bring fresh and original voices to the poetry reading public. The prize will be offered annually to any poet writing in English, including poets who have never published a full length book as well as poets who have published several. New and Selected collections of poems are also welcome. Manuscripts submitted for the 42 Miles Press Poetry Award should exhibit an awareness of the contemporary “voice” in American poetry, an awareness of our moment in time as poets. We are excited to receive poetry that is experimental as well as work of a more formalist bent, as long as it reflects a complexity and sophistication of thought and language. Urgency, yes; melodrama, not so much.
The winning poet will receive $1,000 and publication of his or her book including 50 author copies. The winner will also be invited to give a reading at Indiana University South Bend as part of the release of the book. The final selection will be made by the Series Editor. Current or former students or employees of Indiana University South Bend, as well as friends of the Series Editor, are not eligible for the prize.

The Prairie Schooner Book Prize Series welcomes manuscripts from all living writers, including non-US citizens, writing in English. 12th Annual Screenwriting Challenge
The 12th Annual Screenwriting Challenge is a competition open to screenwriters around the world. There are 3 rounds of competition. In the 1st Round (April 24 – May 2), writers are placed randomly in heats and are assigned a genre, subject, and character assignment (see examples of past assignments here). Writers have 8 days to write an original short screenplay no longer than 12 pages. The judges choose a top 5 in each heat to advance to the 2nd Round (June 18-21) where writers receive new assignments, only this time they have just 3 days to write an 8 page (maximum) short screenplay. Judges choose a top 25 from the 2nd Round to advance to the 3rd and final round of the competition where writers are challenged to write a 5 page (maximum) screenplay in just 24 hours (July 24-25). Gulf Coast Prize

The contest awards publication and $1,500 each to the best poem, essay, and short story, as well as $250 to two honorable mentions in each genre. Her first article, “Duellists of the Deep”, a story about swordfishing with Neil’s Harbour fishermen, was published in MacLeans when she was in her mid-40s and won the Canadian Womens Press Club Memorial Award. From there, she went on to write many more articles for MacLeans, Chatelaine, Saturday Night, and others in the decades to come, as well as Cape Breton Harbour, a book about the time she spent there. And, of course, many readers know her best as the engaging voice of Food that Really Schmecks, a series of cookbooks so entertaining that people read them in bed.
Edna opened the door for generations of personal essayists, not just with her example but with her generosity, founding many awards, scholarships, and bursaries. In 1981, she helped to found The New Quarterly, and in 2005 we were one of many lucky organizations and individuals to receive a gift from her completely out of the blue, a cheque for $25K.
In the spirit of Edna’s contributions to the genre, we are interested in essays of any length, on any topic, in which the writer’s personal engagement with the topic provides the frame or through-line. There is no restriction on essay length or subject matter, but the author must be a Canadian citizen or resident.
We offer a $1,000 prize for the winning essay; all submissions will be considered for paid publication ($250) in the magazine.

Hugo Literary Series: New Works Competition 2015

Every year, we hold a writing competition in conjunction with the Hugo Literary Series. We seek previously unpublished poems, short stories, and personal essays of no more than 1,500 words on the theme “One Hour” (scroll down for more info). The winner will receive $500 and an invitation to read at the final Hugo Literary Series on May 29, 2015, alongside Meg Wolitzer, Justin Torres, Amelia Gray, and musician Abi Grace. The Strongest Start Book Competition 2015

The Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction 2015
The Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction has today announced its 2015 judging panel.The panel will be chaired by Director of Liberty – and author of the bestselling On Liberty – Shami Chakrabarti. Her fellow judges are writer and founder of The Everyday Sexism Project, Laura Bates; the broadcaster, writer and columnist for ES Magazine, Grace Dent; the award-winning poet and novelist (and winner of the first ever Women’s Prize for Fiction in 1996) Helen Dunmore; and Channel 4 News presenter, Cathy Newman.
Shami Chakrabarti says of chairing this year’s panel: “Women writers continue to enthral, educate and entertain so to chair the judges of the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction is going to be great reading and great fun.”
Between them, the judges will be reading more than 150 books – outstanding novels written by women from all over the world – over the next six months as they choose their longlist of twenty titles, then shortlist of six, then the winner of the 2015 Baileys WPfF. Previous winners of the prize include Eimear McBride for A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing (2014), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for Half of a Yellow Sun (2007) and Zadie Smith for On Beauty (2006).
Any woman writing in English – whatever her nationality, country of residence, age or subject matter – is eligible for a full-length novel written in English between 1st April 2014 and 31st March 2015.
The winner will receive a cheque for £30,000 and a limited edition bronze figurine known as a ‘Bessie’, created and donated by the artist Grizel Niven. Both are anonymously endowed.
The Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction 2015 will be awarded on June 3rd 2015 at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London.

The competition is for one-act stage plays about The Beatles. The plays should last about 40 – 45 minutes. We’re not just making idle chit-chat; the weather affects us all, and talking about the weather is a fundamental human experience. Now, as we confront our changing climate, talking about the weather may be more important than ever.

Neil Postman Award for Metaphor

Although primarily known as an educationist and a media critic, Neil Postman was, at his core, a “noticer”—and he particularly noticed what we do with metaphor and how metaphor shapes and creates our cognitive world. Postman maintained that words (and words, in truth, are metaphors) are as much the driver of reality as they are the vehicle. Consequently, metaphor was not a subject to be relegated and limited to high school poetry units wherein a teacher drones on about the difference between “like” and “as” and considers the job finished. For Postman, the study of metaphor was unending and metaphors were as crucial as they were omnipresent; they served to give form to and dictate experience.
In honor and remembrance of Neil Postman, who died on October 5, 2003, we have established the Neil Postman Award for Metaphor. The motivation for the award is simple and two-fold: To reward a given writer for his or her use of metaphor, and to celebrate (and hopefully propagate) Postman’s work and the typographical mind.
Each spring the editors will choose one poem from all of the submissions received by Rattle during the previous year. The author of the chosen poem will receive $500. Hillerman Prize
Sponsored by St. Martin’s Press and WORDHARVEST, the Tony Hillerman Prize is awarded annually for the best first mystery set in the Southwest. The winner receives a contract with St. Martin’s Press for publication of the novel and $10,000. Named after New Mexico’s best known mystery author, the Tony Hillerman Prize competition is open to any professional or non-professional writer who has never been the author of a published mystery, or under contract with a publisher for publication of a mystery. Ekphrasis is a poetry journal looking for well-crafted poems, the main content of which addresses individual works from any artistic genre. GLENNA LUSCHEI PRIZE FOR AFRICAN POETRY
Under the auspices of the African Poetry Book Fund and in partnership with the literary journal, Prairie Schooner, is an annual award of USD $5,000. Named for the literary philanthropist Glenna Luschei, this Pan African Poetry Prize is the only one of its kind in the world and was established to promote African poetry written in English or in translation and to recognize a significant book published each year by an African poet.
Each year, the prize will be judged by an internationally renowned poet. This judge for the inaugural prize is Nigerian poet and novelist Chris Abani.

Online Writing Classes
FanStory.com is a writing site founded in 2000.
On this writing community all posts receive feedback from writers and readers. Feedback includes a detailed comment on the posted work and a rating. The site uses a six star ratings scale with “1” being the worst and “6” being the best.
Writers are ranked based on the feedback they receive. Separate rankings are available for Poets, Novelists, Short Works (short stories and essays) and Script Writers (television and other forms of screenplays). Trophies are rewarded to the top five writers in each of the individual rankings at the end of the year.
The site recognizes writing with “Recognized”, “All Time Best” and “Seal of Quality” levels. Each level is more difficult to receive with the final level determined by the Seal of Quality committee. The committee is made up of published authors and stand-out reviewers. They offer feedback to help writers get published.
The site features free writing contests with cash prizes. Site members also have the ability to create their own contests to challenge other writers to write about a specific topic or a specific form of writing (such as writing using specific poetry format).
The welcome page includes featured writing. It also includes writing that has been well received in the past 24 hours.
Each day over 200 stories and poems are posted. Over 7,000 comments are written on the writing posted daily. Writers keep full copyright to their posted work.

Peerbackers is for business owners to raise capital from their peers — in small increments — in exchange for tangible rewards. Create a personal and venture profile. Share your story through social media share buttons on your project page. Once your campaign is launched, send updates on your progress. If you reach at least 80 percent of your funding goal by deadline, your funding is released to you. Peerbackers charges a 5 percent fee, in addition to third party processing fees.
