Happy Valentine’s Day to you all! What a week it’s been. According to Boomer, we had approximately 5 feet of snow in just 11 days on PEI. Imagine that! The weather certainly is making up for no snow over Christmas. So we’re having a white Valentine’s are we? Speaking of Valentine’s Day, everyone knows that it’s the love month. A great deal of literature has been written about and in the name of love, including some of the most beautiful verses ever, immortalized in words and music. It’s probably the most common theme, and undoubtedly the most universal. It’s right up there with birth and death. Love brings laughter and tears, comedy and drama. It brings out the best and the worst in us and inspires poets to write volumes of verse. Love won is a triumph and love lost is a tragedy. It brings individuals together and saves lives. It pits men against each other and starts wars. Love is completely intangible yet we never tire of finding ways to make it tangible. And for writers, what better way to make it tangible than to put it into words?
In my family, February is also the birthday month—we’re celebrating 5 birthdays, and I find myself having to change add another digit to my age at the cusp of Pisces and Aquarius—but with no regret, because I see each year that passes as a tot against my tally of accomplishments, each year that comes as another chance to do what I haven’t done, accomplish what needs to be done, try what I want, meet new people, do more, change things, learn more, teach things—the list is endless although the time isn’t. My birthdays are my landmarks, even if each birthday isn’t a landmark one—that won’t be until next year!
Once again, reminding you all that the 2015 Cox & Palmer Island Literary Awards is open to submissions, so be sure to check those guidelines and get some writing done. Who knows? You could be bringing home an ILA this year! Good Luck and Happy Writing!

Book Reading and Signing by New Glasgow Author
Peggy Hogan, award winner in the 34th Atlantic Writing Competition, will be selling and signing copies of her book, For a Song (Double Dragon Publishing), on Saturday, February 7th (storm date is February 14th), 2:00 pm at the Confederation Centre Public Library, Charlottetown.
For a Song is about Blat – an unfortunate name for a singer – who stumbles upon an entire race of people that needs saving. He recruits a brilliant, manic-depressive scientist to help him. Their enemy is the sinister Brothers of the Watch whose leader wants what every evildoer wants: power over everyone and everything, and, through mind control, he has the wherewithal to accomplish this. Blat craves the love of a woman, who is a good friend and ignorant of his feelings. Whether he admits it or not, he will go to any length to impress her – even if he dies trying. To Blat’s great advantage, the leader of the Brothers knows nothing of this kind of power.

John MacKenzie Featured Reader at Haviland Club Open Mic Feb. 9
Well-known poet John MacKenzie will be the featured reader at the Haviland Club Open Mic on Monday, Feb. 9. A past recipient of the Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Literary Arts on Prince Edward Island, John MacKenzie has had three collections of his poetry published: Sledgehammer (Polestar Press, 2000), Shaken by Physics (Polestar/Raincoast, 2002), and Letters I Didn’t Write (Nightwood Editions, 2008). He lives in Charlottetown, a grey gull circling the city, scavenging bits of poems from the detritus of lives.
Guest host will be Orysia Dawydiak, novelist, children’s author, and non-fiction writer, as well as PEI’s most recent recipient of the Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Literary Arts. She invites those who like to be read to, and/or wish to read from their own writing, to attend.
Everyone is welcome. Admission is free or by donation. Readers can sign up at 7 p.m. to read their own poetry or prose, for up to five minutes, to a friendly audience.

Roger Gordon’s Library Tour*
*These are the storm dates as a result of cancellation of original dates due to the winter storm and snowfall warnings this past week.
Roger Gordon, Stratford resident and former Dean of Science at UPEI, will be launching his PEI library tour for his new book Starting to Frame – A Memoir at the Stratford Public Library, Bunbury Mall, Stratford on Tuesday, February 10 at 1 p.m. He will then visit the Montague Rotary Library, Wood Islands Road, Montague on Saturday, February 28 at 1 p.m.
Starting to Frame describes the author’s life growing up in a working class home in Sheffield, England, during the 1940s to 60s. Among the social stigmas of the era that he had to deal with were divorce, marital infidelity, and mental illness. It is a story of resiliency that carries an inspirational tone. Roger uses humor, nostalgia, and “coming of age” motifs to provide a light-hearted counterpoint to the more dramatic elements within his childhood and early adulthood.
The author’s library tour, which will culminate mid-April, will encompass six libraries – in addition to the above, Charlottetown, Summerside, O’Leary, and Cornwall. At each location, Roger will discuss the book, read from it, and carry out book signings.

Craig Davidson Book Reading
WHERE: Confederation Centre of the Arts Gallery

Not that long ago, novelist Craig Davidson, author of Cataract City, completed UNB’s graduate program in creative writing and published his first book of stories, Rust and Bone (2005). Since then, this high-energy writer has been short-listed for the Scotiabank Giller Prize for fiction and seen the film version of a Rust and Bone story premier at the Cannes Film Festival. With imaginative drive similar to that of his admirer Stephen King, Davidson has published three literary novels and five novels in the horror genre under the pseudonyms Nick Cutter and Patrick Lestewka.
His/their reading is sponsored by the UPEI English Department, with support from The Canada Council for the Arts and in partnership with the Confederation Centre of the Arts Gallery. A book signing will follow.

The Orison Poetry Prize
Each year from November 1 – February 15 we accept submissions of full-length (60-100 pp.) poetry manuscripts (original English work only; no translations) for consideration for The Orison Poetry Prize. All manuscripts will be read “blind” (all identifying information will be removed from the manuscripts). Finalists will be selected by the editorial staff at Orison Books, and the winner will be selected by a different prominent writer acting as contest judge each year. Current or former students of the judge, or anyone with a close personal relationship with the judge, are not eligible to submit. In the event that the judge does not select a winner from among the finalists, the Editor will select a winner. The editors also reserve the right to select no finalists, in which case all entry fees will be refunded to contest entrants. All finalist manuscripts will be considered for publication under a standard royalties contract.
Winner receives a $1,500 cash prize; publication in hardcover, paperback, and e-book formats; and a standard royalties contract.

The Nick Blatchford Occasional Verse Contest: $1000 for one glorious poem
Sponsored by previous TNQ editor Kim Jernigan and family in celebration of the man who sparked their love of poetry, this contest is for poems written in response to an occasion, personal or public-poems of gratitude or grief, poems that celebrate or berate, poems that make an occasion of something or simply mark one. We are interested in light verse and in verse more sober, in the whole spectrum of tones and occasions. One of Nick’s own poems, which we think captures the broadness of his (and our) sense of ‘occasion’, is pictured at left. It originally appeared in Issue 100 of TNQ.
We will award a grand prize of $1,000 to the poem judged most worthy. Another $1,000 in prize money will be distributed as the judges fancy. However the prize money falls, the best of what we see will be published in The New Quarterly, at our usual rates, and posted on our website.
Entry fee: $40 for up to 2 unpublished poems, $5 each for additional poems. Submissions include a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly and may be accompanied by a brief paragraph describing the event that occasioned the poem.
Eligiblity: Entrants must be Canadian or currently residing in Canada. Entries may not be previously published, accepted, or submitted for publication elsewhere. There are no restrictions on length or number of entries, as long as the appropriate fees are paid. Entrants’ anonymity will be carefully preserved throughout the judging process; please ensure that your name does not appear on your document. The decisions will be made by August 31; winner(s) and finalists will receive notification by mail.

Kelpies Prize 2015
From Dumfries to Dundee, Glasgow to Aberdeen and everywhere in between, we are looking for Scottish children’s novels with a difference.
Fantastic fantasies, sensational sci-fi, awesome adventures and satisfying slices of life — the Kelpies range of Scottish children’s novels has them all. But we are still looking for more. Do you have a cracking story, with strong characters and believable dialogue which children won’t be able to put down? Then we want to read it!
This year, for the first time, we’re looking for entries to the Kelpies Prize in three categories to reflect our expanding audience:
- Young Kelpies (6-8 year olds)
- Kelpies (8-11 year olds)
- KelpiesTeen (11-14 year olds)
The Kelpies Prize was set up in 2004 to encourage and reward new Scottish writing for children. Winning authors receive a £2,000 cash prize and have their novel published in the Kelpies range.

WOW! hosts a (quarterly) writing contest every three months. The mission of this contest is to inspire creativity, communication, and well-rewarded recognition to contestants. The Fiction Desk Ghost Story Competition 2015
Most of the stories we publish at The Fiction Desk are more or less realistic, but we try to stray outside that from time to time: some genre fiction should be part of any balanced reading diet. One genre that we particularly like to feature is the ghost story.

42 Miles Press Poetry Award

The 42 Miles Press Poetry Award is being created in an effort to bring fresh and original voices to the poetry reading public. The prize will be offered annually to any poet writing in English, including poets who have never published a full length book as well as poets who have published several. New and Selected collections of poems are also welcome. Manuscripts submitted for the 42 Miles Press Poetry Award should exhibit an awareness of the contemporary “voice” in American poetry, an awareness of our moment in time as poets. We are excited to receive poetry that is experimental as well as work of a more formalist bent, as long as it reflects a complexity and sophistication of thought and language. Urgency, yes; melodrama, not so much.
The winning poet will receive $1,000 and publication of his or her book including 50 author copies. The winner will also be invited to give a reading at Indiana University South Bend as part of the release of the book. The final selection will be made by the Series Editor. Current or former students or employees of Indiana University South Bend, as well as friends of the Series Editor, are not eligible for the prize.

The Edna Staebler Personal Essay Contest: $1000 for one winning essay
Edna Staebler was a pioneer in the field of literary journalism. Her first article, “Duellists of the Deep”, a story about swordfishing with Neil’s Harbour fishermen, was published in MacLeans when she was in her mid-40s and won the Canadian Womens Press Club Memorial Award. From there, she went on to write many more articles for MacLeans, Chatelaine, Saturday Night, and others in the decades to come, as well as Cape Breton Harbour, a book about the time she spent there. And, of course, many readers know her best as the engaging voice of Food that Really Schmecks, a series of cookbooks so entertaining that people read them in bed.
Edna opened the door for generations of personal essayists, not just with her example but with her generosity, founding many awards, scholarships, and bursaries. In 1981, she helped to found The New Quarterly, and in 2005 we were one of many lucky organizations and individuals to receive a gift from her completely out of the blue, a cheque for $25K.
In the spirit of Edna’s contributions to the genre, we are interested in essays of any length, on any topic, in which the writer’s personal engagement with the topic provides the frame or through-line. There is no restriction on essay length or subject matter, but the author must be a Canadian citizen or resident.
We offer a $1,000 prize for the winning essay; all submissions will be considered for paid publication ($250) in the magazine.
Entry fee: $40 per submission. Each submission includes a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly

The Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction 2015
The Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction has today announced its 2015 judging panel.The panel will be chaired by Director of Liberty – and author of the bestselling On Liberty – Shami Chakrabarti. Her fellow judges are writer and founder of The Everyday Sexism Project, Laura Bates; the broadcaster, writer and columnist for ES Magazine, Grace Dent; the award-winning poet and novelist (and winner of the first ever Women’s Prize for Fiction in 1996) Helen Dunmore; and Channel 4 News presenter, Cathy Newman.
Shami Chakrabarti says of chairing this year’s panel: “Women writers continue to enthral, educate and entertain so to chair the judges of the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction is going to be great reading and great fun.”
Between them, the judges will be reading more than 150 books – outstanding novels written by women from all over the world – over the next six months as they choose their longlist of twenty titles, then shortlist of six, then the winner of the 2015 Baileys WPfF. Previous winners of the prize include Eimear McBride for A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing (2014), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for Half of a Yellow Sun (2007) and Zadie Smith for On Beauty (2006).
Any woman writing in English – whatever her nationality, country of residence, age or subject matter – is eligible for a full-length novel written in English between 1st April 2014 and 31st March 2015.
The winner will receive a cheque for £30,000 and a limited edition bronze figurine known as a ‘Bessie’, created and donated by the artist Grizel Niven. Both are anonymously endowed.

Ticket to Write 2015
The competition is for one-act stage plays about The Beatles. The plays should last about 40 – 45 minutes. We plan to stage the three plays selected in Liverpool later in the year over two nights as in 2014. The audience votes will still be included in the overall choice of the winner of the £150 prize
The plays can feature any aspect of The Beatles – their music, work or lives. They can even be inspired by a song or song-title.

We’re not just making idle chit-chat; the weather affects us all, and talking about the weather is a fundamental human experience. Now, as we confront our changing climate, talking about the weather may be more important than ever.
Send us your true stories—personal, historical, reported—about fog, drought, flooding, tornado-chasing, blizzards, hurricanes, hail the size of golfballs, or whatever’s happening where you are. We’re looking for well-crafted essays that will change the way we see the world around us.

The Peter Hinchcliffe Fiction Award

Winning story: $1000
This contest, is named in honour of Peter Hinchcliffe, who was instrumental in the founding of the magazine and has made an impact in the lives of many students in his longstanding role as lecturer at St. Jerome’s University.
The $1000 top prize will be awarded for a work of short fiction by a Canadian (citizen or resident) writer who has not yet published a first novel or short story collection. Though there is only one top prize, all submissions will be considered for paid publication ($250) in the magazine. All submissions will be judged blind.
Entry fee: $40 per submission. Each submission includes a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly

Neil Postman Award for Metaphor

Although primarily known as an educationist and a media critic, Neil Postman was, at his core, a “noticer”—and he particularly noticed what we do with metaphor and how metaphor shapes and creates our cognitive world. Postman maintained that words (and words, in truth, are metaphors) are as much the driver of reality as they are the vehicle. Consequently, metaphor was not a subject to be relegated and limited to high school poetry units wherein a teacher drones on about the difference between “like” and “as” and considers the job finished. For Postman, the study of metaphor was unending and metaphors were as crucial as they were omnipresent; they served to give form to and dictate experience.
In honor and remembrance of Neil Postman, who died on October 5, 2003, we have established the Neil Postman Award for Metaphor. The motivation for the award is simple and two-fold: To reward a given writer for his or her use of metaphor, and to celebrate (and hopefully propagate) Postman’s work and the typographical mind.
Each spring the editors will choose one poem from all of the submissions received by Rattle during the previous year. The author of the chosen poem will receive $500. Hillerman Prize

GLENNA LUSCHEI PRIZE FOR AFRICAN POETRY
Under the auspices of the African Poetry Book Fund and in partnership with the literary journal, Prairie Schooner, is an annual award of USD $5,000. Named for the literary philanthropist Glenna Luschei, this Pan African Poetry Prize is the only one of its kind in the world and was established to promote African poetry written in English or in translation and to recognize a significant book published each year by an African poet.

Online Writing Classes
FanStory.com is a writing site founded in 2000.
On this writing community all posts receive feedback from writers and readers. Feedback includes a detailed comment on the posted work and a rating. The site uses a six star ratings scale with “1” being the worst and “6” being the best.
Writers are ranked based on the feedback they receive. Separate rankings are available for Poets, Novelists, Short Works (short stories and essays) and Script Writers (television and other forms of screenplays). Trophies are rewarded to the top five writers in each of the individual rankings at the end of the year.
The site recognizes writing with “Recognized”, “All Time Best” and “Seal of Quality” levels. Each level is more difficult to receive with the final level determined by the Seal of Quality committee. The committee is made up of published authors and stand-out reviewers. They offer feedback to help writers get published.
The site features free writing contests with cash prizes. Site members also have the ability to create their own contests to challenge other writers to write about a specific topic or a specific form of writing (such as writing using specific poetry format).
The welcome page includes featured writing. It also includes writing that has been well received in the past 24 hours.
Each day over 200 stories and poems are posted. Over 7,000 comments are written on the writing posted daily. Writers keep full copyright to their posted work.

PEERBACKERS
Peerbackers is for business owners to raise capital from their peers — in small increments — in exchange for tangible rewards. Create a personal and venture profile. Share your story through social media share buttons on your project page. Once your campaign is launched, send updates on your progress. If you reach at least 80 percent of your funding goal by deadline, your funding is released to you. Peerbackers charges a 5 percent fee, in addition to third party processing fees.
