David Helwig and Judy Gaudet Guest Poets

at Haviland Club Open Mic Nov. 10

David Helwig and Judy Gaudet are the featured readers at Haviland Club Open Mic, Monday Nov 10^th at 7 pm. Host Dianne Hicks Morrow, PEI poet laureate, invites everyone who likes to be read to, and everyone willing to read from their own poetry or prose.

David Helwig is a distinguished Canadian poet, novelist and editor living on the Island for the past 18 years. For many years previously he was a professor of English at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He has also worked as story editor for CBC TV and lived as a freelance writer. Helwig has written fifteen books of poetry, including the Atlantic Poetry Award winning The Year One (Gaspereau, 2004.)  His most recent collections are The Sway of Otherwise (Oberon, 2008) and Seawrack (Frog Hollow, 2013). He has been awarded the Matt Cohen prize from the Writers’ Trust of Canada for a lifetime of distinguished literary work (2007), and has been made a member of the Order of Canada (2009). He served as PEI’s poet laureate from 2008 to 2009.

Judy Gaudet has written a chapbook, Poems, You Say (Saturday Morning Chapbooks 2003), and two volumes of poetry, Her Teeth are Stones (Acorn 2005) and Conversation with Crows (Oberon 2014, to be launched Nov 25^th at the Beaconsfield Carriage House). She has been a genealogist, teacher-librarian and teacher, and mother of three. Her poetry celebrates the natural world and explores her Island history.

Everyone is welcome. Admission is free or by donation. Readers can sign up at 7 p.m. to read their own poetry or prose to a friendly audience, up to five minutes.

Starting to Frame

“Starting to Frame” written by local retired UPEI professor and past Dean of Science, Roger Gordon will be launched on Friday, November 14, at The Haviland Club Club, 1 Haviland St. in Charlottetown. The book launch will feature a 50-60’s theme in music, gastronomy, drinks, and costume. Attendees are invited, if they so wish, to come donned in 1950s–1960s attire. Reception begins at 6:30 PM and the official program will begin at 7 PM. All are welcome.

“Starting to Frame” speaks Roger’s upbringing in post-war Sheffield, UK, and gives the reader insight into many of the stigmas of that era, including marital infidelity, divorce, and mental illness. The darker elements of the author’s story are tempered by a nostalgic, informative, and often humorous look into post-WW2 life in a northern England industrial city. In a generous gesture, a portion of Gordon’s royalties will go to charitable organizations dealing with mental illnesses in Canada.

Chris McGarry’s Summer of Fear

at Confederation Centre Public Library

Island author, Chris McGarry will be reading from his new novel, Summer of Fear, at Confederation Centre Public Library Saturday, Nov. 15, 2 pm.  In Summer of fear we meet Antonio Guardini, veteran NYPD homicide detective, devoted husband and father, devout Roman Catholic and prolife activist. A mysterious killer who believes he is receiving orders from God begins targeting abortion doctors in New York City. Antonio and six other detectives are assigned to a task force to investigate the murders. Caught in a moral dilemma, Antonio is forced to temporarily place his personal convictions aside in order to catch the murderer, who is closer to him than he could ever imagine…

2015 Commonwealth Short Story Prize

Open for Entry


Writers have two months to enter their short story.

Each year, we select five winning writers from five different Commonwealth regions who share a total prize money of £15,000. The overall winner receives £5,000, one of the highest amounts for an international short story prize open to unpublished writers. Regional winners receive £2,500.

The Commonwealth Short Story Prize brings stories from new and emerging voices, often from countries with little or no publishing infrastructure, to the attention of an international audience. You don’t need an agent, just an internet connection to submit your unpublished story of 2000-5000 words.

Entry is free. Stories translated into English are also eligible. 

The closing date is 15 November 2014.

Port Bickerton Lighthouse Artist-in-Residence Programme

‘Call to Artists’ Residency Application

Established Atlantic Canadian professional writers and visual artists working in any medium, and whose work draws on the natural environment are invited to apply to the Port Bickerton Lighthouse Artist-in-Residence Programme. The programme is designed to provide work space and accommodation in a retreat environment where participants can work independently on their own project(s) for a two week time period.  

All applicants will be notified within two weeks of application deadline.

Some element of public access must be provided at the end of the residency, such as an artist’s talk, “open studio”, or workshop to be determined in consultation with The Port Bickerton and Area Planning Association. One artist will be selected yearly for the residency.  Artists must advise of their preferred length of stay with two preferences of time frames between May 1st and October 15, 2015.

NOTE:    A vehicle is highly desirable.

Competition Rules for the Howard Nemerov Sonnet Award:

1. Sonnets must be original and unpublished. No translations. Writers may enter up to twelve sonnets. Sonnet sequences are acceptable, but each sonnet will be considered individually. Entry fee: $3 per sonnet, checks payable to Measure Press. Entry fees from outside the U.S. must be paid in cash — U.S. dollars — or by a check drawn on a U.S. bank. The Cesar Egido Serrano Foundation Announces the IV Edition of the International Flash Fiction Competition “César Egido Serrano Foundation”.

The call is part of the activities that the Foundation carries out to gain its objectives. One of the goals of the Foundation is to unite peoples by using words. This is why the motto of the Museum of Words is “Words are the bond of humankind”. Words being used by their double condition of communicative elements and language as cultural heritage of human beings.

In this competition (like in the previous), short stories may be submitted in Spanish, English, Arabic and Hebrew. This lists the languages in which the three monotheistic religions of the world express their religious feelings.

Jane Lumley Prize For Emerging Writers

The first annual Jane Lumley Prize For Emerging Writers is open for submissions till November 30th 2014!

The Jane Lumley Prize is awarded annually to a writer who has yet not published a full length book of poetry or prose. The prize alternates each year between prose and poetry, and the inaugural year will seek to recognize the brilliance of an exceptional piece of poetry.

The winner, selected by our editor, will receive a prize of $300 and will be featured in Issue 6, to be published in January 2015. Publication will also be awarded to the first two semi-finalists. In addition, all the entries will be considered for publication.

Mothering Through the Darkness: A Call for Submissions and a Writing Contest

The HerStories Project is seeking unpublished, first-person essays from mothers about their experiences with postpartum depression, anxiety, or other mental health struggles during or after pregnancy.* We’re looking for well-crafted, true accounts that explore and examine aspects of this experience.

Submissions must feature a strong and compelling narrative. We’re looking for well-written prose, rich detail, and a strong, distinctive voice. (For more about what we’re looking for, here is an article that I wrote about personal essay writing with a few more suggestions.)

University of Arizona Poetry Center’s Summer Residency Program

Since 1994, the Poetry Center’s Residency Program has offered writers an opportunity to develop their work. The Poetry Center will award one residency each summer for a poet to spend two weeks in Tucson, Arizona developing his/her work. Writers at any stage of their careers may apply; emerging writers are welcome. The residency includes a $500 stipend and a two-week stay in a studio apartment located within steps of the Center’s renowned library of contemporary poetry. The residency is offered between June 1 and August 31.

2015 Contest:

We are delighted to announce Eduardo C. Corral as our 2015 Summer Residency judge! Submissions are open via Submittable as of September 15, 2014, and will close on December 15, 2014 at midnight (MST).

Eduardo C. Corral is the author of Slow Lightning, winner of the 2011 Yale Series of Younger Poets competition. He’s the recipient of a Whiting Writers’ Award and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. He teaches in the low-residency MFA program at Pacific University.

This is a blind submission process. Students or family members of the judge are not eligible to apply. Current University of Arizona faculty, staff, students, and Tucson residents are not eligible to receive the residency. International applicants are welcome.

The Poetry Center will contact finalists to receive their CV/Resumes, as well as the contact information for three professional/personal references, before selecting a winner.

Submissions should include:

Christine Eldin Memorial Fellowship

The Lascaux Review will host an annual contest to choose a “best” middle grade novel work-in-progress, along with a short list of finalists, among entries submitted. The contest will be conducted initially in 2014 (for award of the 2015 fellowship) and scheduled annually thereafter. A middle grade novel is understood to mean a work of fiction, typically a chapter book, for readers between the ages of eight and twelve.

Any unpublished middle grade manuscript, in whole or part, for which no publication contract exists at the time of submission, is eligible. Only English language submissions will be considered.

The first year’s fellowship is $1000 and a trophy. The first year’s judge is Louise Hawes. Deadline for submissions is 31 December.

$1600 top prize for short fiction in Writers’ Village Contest Winter 2014

Vernice Quebodeaux “Pathways” Poetry Prize for Women

Little Red Tree Publishing is proud to launch the 5th Vernice Quebodeaux “Pathways” Poetry Prize for Women, which includes a $1000 cash award and offer to publish a full-length collection of poetry with a generous royalty contract. The book will be published sometime in 2015.

Vernice Quebodeaux, born in Egan, LA (on the banks of the Bayou Plaquemine Brûlé), was a poet who spent a lifetime struggling with the demands of raising children, family feuds, bigotry, apathy, and indifference to her writing aspirations. On her death the beginnings of a book of poetry called “Pathways” was found by her daughter Tamara Martin and incorporated into a book, Sundays in the South. We are honoring her life and cherished goals by creating this competition to recognize the specific unique voices of women poets.

The judge for the Vernice Quebodeaux “Pathways” Poetry Prize will be announced shortly.

Little Red Tree: International Poetry Prize

Deadline: December 31. Little Red Tree Publishing is proud to announce its 5th International Poetry Prize, with a first prize of $1,000, runner-up $250, and $50 to five finalists.

Mississippi Review Contest

Our annual contest awards prizes of $1,000 in fiction and in poetry. Winners and finalists will make up next winter’s print issue of the national literary magazine Mississippi Review. Contest is open to all writers in English except current or former students or employees of The University of Southern Mississippi. Stacy Doris Memorial Poetry Award

We are now accepting submissions for the Stacy Doris Memorial Poetry Award. The winning poet will receive $500 and publication in the Spring 2015 issue of Fourteen Hills. There is no submission fee. Poems not chosen for the award will be considered for publication in Fourteen Hills.

Stacy Doris was a poet, translator, and an Associate Professor in San Francisco State University’s Department of Creative Writing, where she taught for ten years. Her poetry is widely recognized; Fledge: A Phenomenology of Spirit, published shortly after her death, is available from Nightboat Books. Poet Maxine Chernoff has referred to it as “a miracle of attentiveness.” She was also highly regarded for her writing in French and her contribution to interactions among contemporary French and American poetry and poets.
Doris created new worlds with her unexpected poetics. Following upon her spirit of creative invention, engaging wit and ingenious playfulness, discovery in construction, and radical appropriations based on classical forms, pastiche, etc., and love, the Stacy Doris Memorial Poetry Award is given to a poet with a truly inventive spirit. The judge for the award is Chet Wiener.

Darker Times Fiction

Neil Postman Award for Metaphor

Although primarily known as an educationist and a media critic, Neil Postman was, at his core, a “noticer”—and he particularly noticed what we do with metaphor and how metaphor shapes and creates our cognitive world. Postman maintained that words (and words, in truth, are metaphors) are as much the driver of reality as they are the vehicle. Consequently, metaphor was not a subject to be relegated and limited to high school poetry units wherein a teacher drones on about the difference between “like” and “as” and considers the job finished. For Postman, the study of metaphor was unending and metaphors were as crucial as they were omnipresent; they served to give form to and dictate experience.

In honor and remembrance of Neil Postman, who died on October 5, 2003, we have established the Neil Postman Award for Metaphor. The motivation for the award is simple and two-fold: To reward a given writer for his or her use of metaphor, and to celebrate (and hopefully propagate) Postman’s work and the typographical mind.

Each spring the editors will choose one poem from all of the submissions received by Rattle during the previous year. The author of the chosen poem will receive $500. Hillerman Prize

Sponsored by St. Martin’s Press and WORDHARVEST, the Tony Hillerman Prize is awarded annually for the best first mystery set in the Southwest. The winner receives a contract with St. Martin’s Press for publication of the novel and $10,000. Named after New Mexico’s best known mystery author, the Tony Hillerman Prize competition is open to any professional or non-professional writer who has never been the author of a published mystery, or under contract with a publisher for publication of a mystery. Murder or another serious crime or crimes must be at the heart of the story, with the emphasis on the solution rather than the details of the crime.

Only one manuscript entry is permitted per writer. All entries must be received or postmarked no later than June 1 of the given year. All manuscripts submitted: a) must be original works of book length (no less than 220 typewritten pages or approximately 60,000 words) written in the English language by the contestants; b) must not violate the rights of any third party, and c) must generally follow the guidelines.

Ekphrasis Prize for Poetry

Ekphrasis is a poetry journal looking for well-crafted poems, the main content of which addresses individual works from any artistic genre. Please identify the specific work that is the focus of your poem. Acceptable ekphrastic verse transcends mere description: it stands as transformative critical statement, an original gloss on the individual art piece it addresses.

GLENNA LUSCHEI PRIZE FOR AFRICAN POETRY

Under the auspices of the African Poetry Book Fund and in partnership with the literary journal, Prairie Schooner, is an annual award of USD $5,000. Named for the literary philanthropist Glenna Luschei, this Pan African Poetry Prize is the only one of its kind in the world and was established to promote African poetry written in English or in translation and to recognize a significant book published each year by an African poet.

Each year, the prize will be judged by an internationally renowned poet. This judge for the inaugural prize is Nigerian poet and novelist Chris Abani.

Manuscripts are accepted annually between May 1st and July 1st.

2014 Bellevue Literary Review Prizes

The annual Bellevue Literary Review Prizes award outstanding writing related to themes of health, healing, illness, the mind, and the body. The contest is open each year from February 1 – July 1.

Diana Woods Memorial (DWM) Award

Creative nonfiction authors are invited to submit an essay of up to 5,000 words on the subject of their choice to be considered for the Diana Woods Memorial (DWM) Award in creative nonfiction. Winners will receive $250 and their work will be featured in the next issue of Lunch Ticket. Each award recipient must submit a 100-word biography, current photo, and send a brief note of thanks to the Woods’ family.

Hi everyone,

I don’t send a lot of these mass messages, I prefer to talk in person at the write-ins, or through our direct messages, or even on the forums, but there are a few times throughout the month that I will reach out and touch base with the whole PEI region, just to make sure everyone knows I’m here.

Writer’s Block Festival 2014

Since 2011, Louisville Literary Arts has transformed Louisville’s dynamic NuLu shopping and entertainment district on East Market Street into a writer’s block.  We are pleased to announce the next festival will be Friday and Saturday, November 14 & 15.

The Writer’s Block Festival celebrates literature and the writing craft.  The event is free and open to the public (except for craft workshops, which are available for a small fee). We invite all persons who share a love of reading and/or writing.

The festival begins with the INKY Reading Series on Friday night, November 14 at 7 PM, at the Bard’s Town Tavern with poet, Dave Baker (Treatise on Touch, Arc Publications, 2007), and novelist, Jacinda Townsend (Saint Monkey, Norton, 2014).  Both of these featured readers will conduct workshops on the following day.

Beginning at 9 AM on November 15, participants will attend lectures, readings, workshops and panel discussions by local and national writers in various genres.

Our keynote speaker on November 15 is poet and memoirist Nick Flynn.  Thanks to University of Louisville and its Anne and Bill Axton Reading Series, for making Nick Flynn’s visit possible.  Mr. Flynn will be at the U of L Cressman Center, on 1st and Main Street, beginning with a reception at 5 PM following days activities in NULU. The reading is free but reservations are required.

A.I.R. Studio Paducah

A.I.R. Studio Paducah is an Artist-in-Residence Studio and efficiency apartment located in the Lower Town Arts District of Paducah, Kentucky six blocks from the Ohio River. We welcome self-motivated, focused artists working in a range of visual arts practices, as well as writers and composers. Residents are encouraged to have a clear objective for their residency. Stays usually range from two weeks to three months. Collaborative artists and couples are welcome to apply.

PROGRAM BENEFITS

The residency affords the artist time and space for focused, independent studio work, the development of new ideas and experimentation. Visits to local galleries and studios as well as short trips to regional arts facilities can open a range of networking possibilities. The A.I.R. Studio building features a storefront with a front wall gallery space for exhibiting work while in residence. Artists may also conduct workshops at the studio during their stay. Opportunities to work in collaboration with other artists and galleries in the Paducah community are often available.

A professional writer and/or storyteller is sought for the position of Writer/Storyteller-in-Residence at the University of Manitoba’s Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture.  The three-month residency, from September 8 to December 8, 2015, will require the successful candidate to spend approximately 16 hours per week providing mentorship and practical artistic advice to developing writers and storytellers at the University of Manitoba, to give a limited number of readings and/or performances on campus, and to lead an informal non-credit workshop.  The remaining time is to be devoted to the writer or storyteller’s own artistic projects. The successful candidate will receive a salary of $15,000.00 CAD, plus rent-free accommodation and return transportation to Winnipeg.  There may also be a separate additional residency from January 3 to April 3, 2016, subject to availability of funds, so applicants are encouraged to mention their availability during this period as well.

Cullman Center Fellowships

The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers offers fellowships to people whose work will benefit directly from access to the research collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street (formerly the Humanities and Social Sciences Library). Renowned for the extraordinary comprehensiveness of its collections, the Library is one of the world’s preeminent resources for study in anthropology, art, geography, history, languages and literature, philosophy, politics, popular culture, psychology, religion, sociology, and sports.

Criteria and Terms

The Cullman Center’s Selection Committee awards up to 15 fellowships a year to outstanding scholars and writers – academics, independent scholars, journalists, and creative writers. Foreign nationals conversant in English are welcome to apply. Candidates who need to work primarily in The New York Public Library’s other research libraries – The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and the Science, Industry and Business Library – are not eligible for this fellowship, nor are people seeking funding for research leading directly to a degree.

EST-NORD-EST RESIDENCY

Three residencies are offered per year, in the spring, summer and 
fall. Up to four artists and a curator or a writer may participate 
in each residence, eight weeks for the artists, four weeks for the 
curator or the writer. Curators and writers receive a $572 stipend 
and free lodging for the four-week period of the residence. A $260 
writer’s fee will also be paid for texts on the residency produced 
for publication by Est-Nord-Est (250 words per artist). Curators and 
writers have access to an individual studio space, documentation on 
the artists, certain electronic equipment, logistical support… and

ISLAND Hill House Artist Residency Program

Hill House Residency supports talented emerging songwriters, writers at all stages of their career and non-studio artists (see a more complete definition below) with a two, three or four week stay in a semi-secluded log cabin near East Jordan, Michigan. It includes a well-stocked kitchen, a selection of instruments and some basic recording gear, as well as opportunities for community exchange through performance, readings and workshops (only at your request, of course). The emerging musician residency also offers a small stipend to aid in your professional development.

Artists age 21 and older from anywhere in the world may apply. Solo artists as well as collaborating teams of up to four people may apply.

The residency lasts a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of four weeks.

There is a $25 application fee. This fee is per application period. Applying for an entire year will cost $50. While there is no additional cost to you, you will still need money for incidentals, materials and transportation to and from the residency. Also consider indirect costs: time away from your job and paying bills at home while you are in residence.

Osage Arts Community Residency

Osage Arts Community is a place that provides temporary time, space, and support for the creation of new work in a retreat format. These creative residencies are generally anywhere from one week to one year but average around six months. OAC serves creative people of all kinds – visual artists, composers, poets, fiction and nonfiction writers.

OAC is located on a 152-acre farm in an isolated rural mountainside setting in Central Missouri bordered by ¾ of a mile of the Gasconade River. We provide a solitary retreat to those working alone, as well as welcoming collaborative teams, offering a living space and a country environment in addition to workspace to emerging and mid-career artists.

Port Bickerton Lighthouse Artist-in-Residence Programme

‘Call to Artists’ Residency Application

Established Atlantic Canadian professional writers and visual artists working in any medium, and whose work draws on the natural environment are invited to apply to the Port Bickerton Lighthouse Artist-in-Residence Programme. The programme is designed to provide work space and accommodation in a retreat environment where participants can work independently on their own project(s) for a two week time period.  

All applicants will be notified within two weeks of application deadline.

Some element of public access must be provided at the end of the residency, such as an artist’s talk, “open studio”, or workshop to be determined in consultation with The Port Bickerton and Area Planning Association. One artist will be selected yearly for the residency.  Artists must advise of their preferred length of stay with two preferences of time frames between May 1st and October 15, 2015.

NOTE:    A vehicle is highly desirable.

Red Gate Residency

Red Gate Residency was founded in 2001, by the leading art gallery in China and has since been committed to the promotion of multicultural art dialogue within an immersion setting. Each year, they host over 70 artists from all over the world in the residency. In order to provide artists-in-residence with abundant opportunities to explore the local art scene, they also cooperate with art spaces and projects in Beijing and coordinate exhibitions and activities.

Eligible Applicants

There is no limitation by medium nor by nationality. We are open to multicultural and cross-disiplinary exchange. We work with artists who can organize their own funds and or have received grants to cover their residency.

Application Process

We ask that all applicants apply using our online application form. Portfolio and brief bigography are required. Applicants also need to outline their residency objectives. 

The length of residencies range from 1 month to 6 months (we prefer to take bookings by the month). Applications are received on a rolling basis. Although at times we may have last minute space available, our facilities commonly fill six months in advance so we encourage an early application.

However, the two highest amounts ($2,000 and $2,500) are available only if you are traveling to or from northern Canada or to international destinations other than the United States and Europe. These grants cannot be used for travel that occurs before the date that the application is submitted. You might not be awarded the full amount requested.

Fellowships for advanced professionals in all fields – including the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and creative arts, except the performing arts. Last year, the program awarded fellowships to one hundred and eighty-one scholars, artists, and scientists. Often characterized as “mid-career” awards, the fellowships are intended for individuals who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. The program seeks to further the development of scholars and artists by helping them engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions. The foundation understands the performing arts to be those in which an individual interprets work created by others. Accordingly, the foundation will provide fellowships to composers but not conductors, singers, or instrumentalists; choreographers but not dancers; filmmakers, playwrights, and performance artists who create their own work but not actors or theater directors. Grant amounts vary, and the foundation does not guarantee it will fully fund any project.

Millay Colony for the Arts

We now offer two chances to apply annually:

Each year Millay Colony invites 52 visual artists, writers and composers for a colony residency. Residents are chosen anonymously by a panel of jurors in each discipline. The application process is competitive and based solely on the merit of the artist statement and work sample. Past jurors and their bios can be viewed on our Juries page. We look to make our programs accessible to as many artists as possible. Toward that end, we offer Month-long Residencies, Two-week Residencies in June & September, Virtual Residencies, and Group Residencies.

The Millay Colony accepts residents on the basis of artistic merit. Our admissions policy does not discriminate with regard to race, sex, sexual preference, religion, marital status, disability or nation of origin.

Online Writing Classes

FanStory.com is a writing site founded in 2000.

On this writing community all posts receive feedback from writers and readers. Feedback includes a detailed comment on the posted work and a rating. The site uses a six star ratings scale with “1” being the worst and “6” being the best.

Writers are ranked based on the feedback they receive. Separate rankings are available for Poets, Novelists, Short Works (short stories and essays) and Script Writers (television and other forms of screenplays). Trophies are rewarded to the top five writers in each of the individual rankings at the end of the year.

The site recognizes writing with “Recognized”, “All Time Best” and “Seal of Quality” levels. Each level is more difficult to receive with the final level determined by the Seal of Quality committee. The committee is made up of published authors and stand-out reviewers. They offer feedback to help writers get published.

The site features free writing contests with cash prizes. Site members also have the ability to create their own contests to challenge other writers to write about a specific topic or a specific form of writing (such as writing using specific poetry format).

The welcome page includes featured writing. It also includes writing that has been well received in the past 24 hours.

Each day over 200 stories and poems are posted. Over 7,000 comments are written on the writing posted daily. Writers keep full copyright to their posted work.

UCROSS FOUNDATION RESIDENCIES

Provides uninterrupted time, workspace, and living accommodations to competitively selected visual artists, writers, and composers. Accepting applications for its 2015 Spring Residency program, which runs from late-February to mid-June. Residencies vary in length from two weeks to six weeks. Most meals are provided, and there is cell phone service on the property as well as wireless Internet connection for resident use. Residents are responsible for providing their own working materials and for their travel to Sheridan, Wyoming. There is no charge for a residency. Artists, writers, and composers from the United States and around the globe in any stage of their professional careers are invited to apply.
