Safe Today | Strong Tomorrow
Safe Today | Strong Tomorrow is a fundraising project of PEI Family Violence Prevention
Services. We are seeking artists and creative writers to contribute to a collective book of
thoughtful photographs and writings that celebrate resilience, love, and the human spirit.
The book will showcase an uplifting look at healthy relationships, the beauty and strength of
individuals who have experienced family violence, and the capability of a community to
show kindness and support – especially in times of need.
Photographers and writers are invited to submit an image (min 300 dpi), poem (max
35 lines incl. stanza breaks), or prose (max 300 words) they feel is aligned with the
themes of this book. What does a healthy relationship look like to you? What
symbolizes strength to you? Do you have a story that illustrates triumph over
adversity, or about an act of kindness and support? We welcome thought-provoking
and creative ways to portray these themes and will enlist a volunteer committee of
artists, art enthusiasts, writers and editors to help curate this project.
All proceeds from Safe Today | Strong Tomorrow will help offset the expenses associated
with the programming of PEI Family Violence Preventions Services including emergency
shelter, community outreach services, second stage housing, youth programming and more.

Hugh MacDonald: Cold Against the Heart
Hugh MacDonald will be reading from his book of poetry, Cold Against the Heart and speaking about the craft of writing at Confederation Centre Public Library, Saturday, Sept. 6, 3 pm. MacDonald’s poems sing of the Maritimes, and what it’s like to grow up by the sea. He writes about farming on Prince Edward Island, and the daily routine of making a living on the eastern seaboard. A previous poet laureate of Prince Edward Island, Hugh MacDonald is well known as poet, editor and novelist.

Diana Woods Memorial (DWM) Award
Creative nonfiction authors are invited to submit an essay of up to 5,000 words on the subject of their choice to be considered for the Diana Woods Memorial (DWM) Award in creative nonfiction. Winners will receive $250 and their work will be featured in the next issue of Lunch Ticket. Each award recipient must submit a 100-word biography, current photo, and send a brief note of thanks to the Woods’ family.

The Portico Brotherton Poetry Prize
The Portico Brotherton Poetry Prize celebrates new poetry, using themes to stimulate creativity in both an Open category and a Young category.
The Portico Library launched the Portico Poetry Prize in 2012 with two categories: Open (Over 16s) and Young (Under 18s). This prize was piloted with independent funding by Lynne and David Allan and following the great success of the first year, was established as a significant member of the Portico Literary Prize family. The criteria for the prizes of the first two years were themed on Charles Dickens (2012) and Correspondence (2013). First, second and third places are assigned to the top three entries in both categories. Winners of the Open category receive cash prizes and all winning entries are included in a Poetry anthology. In addition, the Open category facilitates the opportunity for young people to win a higher prize.

In 2014 The Portico Library has joined with The Brotherton Library at the University of Leeds to present the third year of this ever-growing poetry competition.

2014 Barthelme Prize for Short Prose

Gulf Coast is now accepting entries for the 2014 Barthelme Prize for Short Prose. The contest is open to pieces of prose poetry, flash fiction, and micro-essays of 500 words or fewer. Established in 2008, the contest awards its winner $1,000 and publication in the journal. Two honorable mentions will also appear in issue 27.2, due out in April 2015, and all entries will be considered for paid publication on our website as Online Exclusives. This year’s contest will be judged by Amy Hempel. A recipient of awards from the Guggenheim and United States Artists Foundations, and the Academy of Arts and Letters, Amy Hempel is the author of four collections of stories. Published in Harper’s, Vanity Fair, Tin House, GQ, and many more, her Collected Stories was named by the New York Times as one of the ten best books of 2007. It won the Ambassador Book Award for best fiction of the year. In 2008 and 2009, the REA Award and PEN/Malamud Award for the Short Story followed. She teaches at Harvard and Bennington.

The RBC Taylor Prize
THE RBC TAYLOR PRIZE commemorates Charles Taylor’s pursuit of excellence in the field of literary non-fiction. The Prize will be awarded to the author whose book best combines a superb command of the English language, an elegance of style, and a subtlety of thought and perception. The Prize consists of $25,000 for the winner and $2,000 for each of the runners up as well as promotional support to help all shortlisted books stand out in the national media, bookstores, and libraries. Authors whose books have been shortlisted for the prize will be brought to Toronto for the awards ceremony, where the winner will announce his or her choice for the RBC Taylor Prize Emerging Writer’s Award, which consists of $10,000 and an opportunity to be mentored by the winner. The winner will be invited to read at the International Festival of Authors, held in October at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto.

Humour Verse Competition
Welcome to our Humour Verse Competition! Now in its fourth year. There is a scarcity of humour verse competitions with worthwhile prize money, even though there are huge numbers of people who like to write and read funny poems. So we at Flash 500 are rather proud of this one, which has grown into a must-enter competition for writers of humour verse.
What are we looking for? Any form of humour will be accepted, in any style, but the content must be original and it has to make us smile. Anything from a limerick to a poem of 32 lines in length is accepted.
The competition will be run quarterly with closing dates matching the Flash 500 competition: 31st March, 30th June, 30th September and 31st December. The results will be announced within six weeks of closing date and the three winning entries each quarter will be published on this website.

Welcome to the Flash 500 Competition! When it comes to prizes, it often seems as though flash fiction is the poor relation of writing competitions. From the first quarter 2014, we have increased our second prize to £200 and third prize to £100, making this a flash fiction competition where the prize money truly reflects the skill required to encapsulate an entire story in just 500 words.

The Payton James Freeman Essay Prize

The Freeman Family and the Drake University Department of English invite you to submit outstanding unpublished non-fiction essays of up to 3500 words on the subject [[AFTER THE UNHAPPY ENDING]].

Your challenge: Write a creative, compelling, well-crafted story between 1,000 and 5,000 words long that focuses on at least one of the many aspects/definitions of the word property. You can even write a story about the property of a thing if you want. (For instance, sweetness is a property of sugar.) Or you can take a more conventional definition and focus on that.

Mississippi Review Contest

Darker Times Fiction

Neil Postman Award for Metaphor

Although primarily known as an educationist and a media critic, Neil Postman was, at his core, a “noticer”—and he particularly noticed what we do with metaphor and how metaphor shapes and creates our cognitive world. Postman maintained that words (and words, in truth, are metaphors) are as much the driver of reality as they are the vehicle. Consequently, metaphor was not a subject to be relegated and limited to high school poetry units wherein a teacher drones on about the difference between “like” and “as” and considers the job finished. For Postman, the study of metaphor was unending and metaphors were as crucial as they were omnipresent; they served to give form to and dictate experience.
In honor and remembrance of Neil Postman, who died on October 5, 2003, we have established the Neil Postman Award for Metaphor. The motivation for the award is simple and two-fold: To reward a given writer for his or her use of metaphor, and to celebrate (and hopefully propagate) Postman’s work and the typographical mind.
Each spring the editors will choose one poem from all of the submissions received by Rattle during the previous year. The author of the chosen poem will receive $500. Hillerman Prize
Sponsored by St. Martin’s Press and WORDHARVEST, the Tony Hillerman Prize is awarded annually for the best first mystery set in the Southwest. The winner receives a contract with St. Martin’s Press for publication of the novel and $10,000. Ekphrasis is a poetry journal looking for well-crafted poems, the main content of which addresses individual works from any artistic genre. GLENNA LUSCHEI PRIZE FOR AFRICAN POETRY
Under the auspices of the African Poetry Book Fund and in partnership with the literary journal, Prairie Schooner, is an annual award of USD $5,000. Named for the literary philanthropist Glenna Luschei, this Pan African Poetry Prize is the only one of its kind in the world and was established to promote African poetry written in English or in translation and to recognize a significant book published each year by an African poet.
Each year, the prize will be judged by an internationally renowned poet. This judge for the inaugural prize is Nigerian poet and novelist Chris Abani.

Since 2011, Louisville Literary Arts has transformed Louisville’s dynamic NuLu shopping and entertainment district on East Market Street into a writer’s block. We are pleased to announce the next festival will be Friday and Saturday, November 14 & 15.
The Writer’s Block Festival celebrates literature and the writing craft. The event is free and open to the public (except for craft workshops, which are available for a small fee). We invite all persons who share a love of reading and/or writing.
The festival begins with the INKY Reading Series on Friday night, November 14 at 7 PM, at the Bard’s Town Tavern with poet, Dave Baker (Treatise on Touch, Arc Publications, 2007), and novelist, Jacinda Townsend (Saint Monkey, Norton, 2014). Both of these featured readers will conduct workshops on the following day.
Beginning at 9 AM on November 15, participants will attend lectures, readings, workshops and panel discussions by local and national writers in various genres.

Our keynote speaker on November 15 is poet and memoirist Nick Flynn. Thanks to University of Louisville and its Anne and Bill Axton Reading Series, for making Nick Flynn’s visit possible. Mr. Flynn will be at the U of L Cressman Center, on 1st and Main Street, beginning with a reception at 5 PM following days activities in NULU. The reading is free but reservations are required.

Cullman Center Fellowships
The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers offers fellowships to people whose work will benefit directly from access to the research collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street (formerly the Humanities and Social Sciences Library). Renowned for the extraordinary comprehensiveness of its collections, the Library is one of the world’s preeminent resources for study in anthropology, art, geography, history, languages and literature, philosophy, politics, popular culture, psychology, religion, sociology, and sports.
Criteria and Terms
The Cullman Center’s Selection Committee awards up to 15 fellowships a year to outstanding scholars and writers – academics, independent scholars, journalists, and creative writers. Foreign nationals conversant in English are welcome to apply. Candidates who need to work primarily in The New York Public Library’s other research libraries – The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and the Science, Industry and Business Library – are not eligible for this fellowship, nor are people seeking funding for research leading directly to a degree.

EST-NORD-EST RESIDENCY

Three residencies are offered per year, in the spring, summer and fall. Up to four artists and a curator or a writer may participate in each residence, eight weeks for the artists, four weeks for the curator or the writer. Curators and writers receive a $572 stipend and free lodging for the four-week period of the residence. A $260 writer’s fee will also be paid for texts on the residency produced for publication by Est-Nord-Est (250 words per artist). Curators and writers have access to an individual studio space, documentation on the artists, certain electronic equipment, logistical support… and a bicycle. Location Quebec.

ISLAND Hill House Artist Residency Program
Hill House Residency supports talented emerging songwriters, writers at all stages of their career and non-studio artists (see a more complete definition below) with a two, three or four week stay in a semi-secluded log cabin near East Jordan, Michigan. It includes a well-stocked kitchen, a selection of instruments and some basic recording gear, as well as opportunities for community exchange through performance, readings and workshops (only at your request, of course). The emerging musician residency also offers a small stipend to aid in your professional development.
Artists age 21 and older from anywhere in the world may apply. Solo artists as well as collaborating teams of up to four people may apply.
The residency lasts a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of four weeks.
There is a $25 application fee. This fee is per application period. Applying for an entire year will cost $50. While there is no additional cost to you, you will still need money for incidentals, materials and transportation to and from the residency. Also consider indirect costs: time away from your job and paying bills at home while you are in residence.

Osage Arts Community Residency
Osage Arts Community is a place that provides temporary time, space, and support for the creation of new work in a retreat format. These creative residencies are generally anywhere from one week to one year but average around six months. OAC serves creative people of all kinds – visual artists, composers, poets, fiction and nonfiction writers.
OAC is located on a 152-acre farm in an isolated rural mountainside setting in Central Missouri bordered by ¾ of a mile of the Gasconade River. Red Gate Residency
Red Gate Residency was founded in 2001, by the leading art gallery in China and has since been committed to the promotion of multicultural art dialogue within an immersion setting. Each year, they host over 70 artists from all over the world in the residency. In order to provide artists-in-residence with abundant opportunities to explore the local art scene, they also cooperate with art spaces and projects in Beijing and coordinate exhibitions and activities.
Eligible Applicants
There is no limitation by medium nor by nationality. We are open to multicultural and cross-disiplinary exchange. We work with artists who can organize their own funds and or have received grants to cover their residency.

We ask that all applicants apply using our online application form. Portfolio and brief bigography are required. Applicants also need to outline their residency objectives. The length of residencies range from 1 month to 6 months (we prefer to take bookings by the month). Applications are received on a rolling basis. Fellowships for advanced professionals in all fields – including the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and creative arts, except the performing arts. Often characterized as “mid-career” awards, the fellowships are intended for individuals who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. The program seeks to further the development of scholars and artists by helping them engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions. The foundation understands the performing arts to be those in which an individual interprets work created by others. Accordingly, the foundation will provide fellowships to composers but not conductors, singers, or instrumentalists; choreographers but not dancers; filmmakers, playwrights, and performance artists who create their own work but not actors or theater directors. Grant amounts vary, and the foundation does not guarantee it will fully fund any project.

FanStory.com is a writing site founded in 2000.
On this writing community all posts receive feedback from writers and readers. Feedback includes a detailed comment on the posted work and a rating. The site uses a six star ratings scale with “1” being the worst and “6” being the best.
Writers are ranked based on the feedback they receive. Separate rankings are available for Poets, Novelists, Short Works (short stories and essays) and Script Writers (television and other forms of screenplays). Trophies are rewarded to the top five writers in each of the individual rankings at the end of the year.
The site recognizes writing with “Recognized”, “All Time Best” and “Seal of Quality” levels. Each level is more difficult to receive with the final level determined by the Seal of Quality committee. Public Engagement in the Arts
The Canada Council is launching a dialogue about how the arts bring value to the lives of Canadians and we invite you to join the conversation. Read the discussion paper, Public Engagement in the Arts, on current thinking and practices in public engagement or check out Simon Brault’s blog post on ways Canadians can have rich artistic experiences. Then share your thoughts on how to become actively engaged in the arts. Tell us what public engagement in the arts means to you by posting comments on the blog, on our Facebook page or on Twitter at hashtag #artsandpublic. In its 2011-16 Strategic Plan, the Council identified public engagement in the arts as a strategic theme that infuses all of its work. We hope to broaden and enhance the public conversation about this topic and use this discussion to inform the development of future Council activities.

TRAVEL GRANTS FOR PROFESSIONAL CANADIAN WRITERS
Travel Grants enable writers, translators, literary performers, spoken word artists and storytellers to respond to invitations to specific international literary events that are important to their artistic development and career, or within Canada, participate in a writer’s residency. No deadline. $500 to $2,500.

UCROSS FOUNDATION RESIDENCIES

Provides uninterrupted time, workspace, and living accommodations to competitively selected visual artists, writers, and composers. Accepting applications for its 2015 Spring Residency program, which runs from late-February to mid-June. Residencies vary in length from two weeks to six weeks. Most meals are provided, and there is cell phone service on the property as well as wireless Internet connection for resident use. Residents are responsible for providing their own working materials and for their travel to Sheridan, Wyoming. There is no charge for a residency. Artists, writers, and composers from the United States and around the globe in any stage of their professional careers are invited to apply.

Do you have a passion for creative writing? Perhaps you work in a field that requires strong writing skills? Whatever your reasons for wanting to be a better writer, University of Calgary Continuing Education can help.
Three writing certificate programs are offered, all of which are delivered completely online. When you enroll in a course, you will be required to work within scheduled start- and end-dates and will be expected to meet assignment timelines. During the duration of the course, you will work whenever-and from wherever-you choose, as long as you have a computer and a reliable internet connection.
