The Island Media Arts Coop is looking for creative writers who want to develop skills in writing for the screen-based entertainment industry.   The focus at this year’s PEI Screenwriters’ Bootcamp will be on writing dramatic web series and low and micro budget features.

Louise Lalonde, Project Coordinator, is pleased to announce that Tom Shoebridge, a seven-year veteran of Bootcamp  will once again bring his own special brand of professional development that leaves participants ready to tackle their first project.  She adds that ” For the more advanced writers, Bill Boyle will be working with individuals, getting their first draft on track, and Jill Golick, award-winning producer of Ruby Sky P.I.  is back for a return engagement mentoring writers in developing dramatic series for both the web and television. Louise has been coordinating this event from day one and is happy to report  that “we have so many success stories now that it’s impossible to ignore the importance of this workshop series in building careers. “

Once again, a two-day introductory workshop will be on offer for the general public for a minimal fee.  Details will be available in the spring.

IMAC is working closely with all of its sponsors, in particular, Telefilm Canada, the Independent Production Fund, Astral Media, Super Channel, and Innovation PEI by offering these workshops to Atlantic Canadians and building our Canadian film and video industry one story at a time.

The deadline for submissions is April 3 and the workshops are being held from May 17 to 21, 2014 at the Haviland Club in Charlottetown, PEI.  This year, the organizers are waiving the application fees and removing one more barrier for hopeful writers.  For more information, visit

Poet Laureate’s Open Mic Takes March Break

Host Dianne Hicks Morrow, PEI poet laureate, announces that her Haviland Open Mic Series will take a March break, but invites readers and listeners to the special Poetry Month event, on Tuesday, April 8, from 7-9 p.m. in the Great Room.


Because April is Poetry Month, the featured reader will be none other than PEI’s first poet laureate, John Smith, professor emeritus of English at UPEI. He is the author of seven books of poetry and is renowned for his dramatic poetry readings. He has titled this reading:

Pocket Poems Revisited

Put these in your pocket: a presentation of little poems with big things to say, from Shakespeare to now.


Everyone is welcome. Readers can sign up at 7 p.m. to read their own poetry or prose, anywhere from three to five minutes.

The PEI Writers’ Guild and the UPEI Department of English are pleased to announce that PEI Poet Laureate Dianne Hicks Morrow will be facilitating a poetry workshop for writers of all levels in Charlottetown on Saturday, April 26th.


Dianne Hicks Morrow is PEI’s current poet laureate. Her most recent collection, What Really Happened Is This, won the 2012 PEI Book Award for poetry. She has given poetry readings and workshops across Canada and in Tasmania, Australia.


Playing with Poetry Forms


Come have some fun with poetry forms. You’ll learn the difference between a gazelle and a ghazal, a villain and a villanelle. You’ll see how to write a sijo—a fat haiku—and a sonnet, the rap music of Shakespeare’s day. You’ll have a chance to play with pantoums and paradelles. You’ll choose which forms you want to try on the spot, and even share them with the group, if you wish.


Whether you’re just starting to write poetry, or an old hand at it, you’ll write a new poem, or even two or three, during this workshop.

27th Annual Island Literary Awards

The 27th Annual Island Literary Awards gala ceremony will take place in the fall of 2014. Prizes will be given out in six categories, and special awards may also be awarded. Visit to learn more about the categories and awards.

The Karen and Philip Cushman Late Bloomer Award is for authors over 
the age of fifty who have not been traditionally published in the 
children’s literature field. The award is open to both unpublished 
children’s book authors or author/illustrators over the age of fifty, 
and one winner will be chosen from the pool of those who have submitted 
material for the SCBWI Work-In-Progress Grants. The winner will receive 
$500 in cash, and free tuition to any worldwide SCBWI conference. The 
first winner will be selected this year and announced along with the 
other Work-in-Progress Grant recipients. This award is open for

Vela’s First Non-fiction Contest for Women Writers

We’re thrilled to announce our first-ever nonfiction contest at Vela!

We’re looking for creative nonfiction, written by women, with a strong voice, a compelling narrative, and/or a powerful driving question. We’re interested in a wide range of essays and stories, including literary journalism, personal essays, memoir, and expository or experimental essays. We are not a “women’s magazine,” and are not looking for work that is written solely for a female audience.

First place award: $500 and publication.

Two finalists: Publication.


Essays must be previously unpublished and no longer than 6,500 words. There is no entry fee. We understand that times are tough and we want all women writers, regardless of financial circumstances, to be able to submit. Win a £500 ($800) Writers’ Village Foundation bursary for your debut novel

Are you a new author who has yet to see your novel published? Do you have a completed draft, almost ready to submit to an agent or publisher or to be formatted for self-publication? Then you owe it to yourself to have it professionally critiqued to be sure it’s as good as it can be.


Here’s how you can win a £500 (approx. $800) bursary at the Writers’ Village Foundation to pay for that critique.


The Foundation is a not-for-profit award program designed to help and encourage new authors, who have not yet published a novel, to prepare their work for submission to an agent or publisher. Every calendar quarter the program endows bursaries having a notional cash value of up to £500 (approx. $800) each. The bursaries must be redeemed for copy critiques at the Hilary Johnson Authors’ Advisory Service. Across the past twenty years this service has coached many thousands of new authors to publishing success.

Two bursaries will be awarded in the current roundending midnight GMT 31st March 2014. Subsequent rounds will close: 30th June, 30th September and 31st December 2014.


The eight top shortlisted entrants, whether they win a bursary or not, will also gain a brief commentary on their submission written by the award judge Michelle Spring. Entries must be in English.

Imagine This! Anthology Competition

Imagine This!  An ArtPrize Anthology is a collection of poems, short stories, and personal essays, along with reproductions of works displayed during ArtPrize, an international art competition held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The selections in Imagine This! are the culmination of an anthology competition sponsored by the Cascade Writers’ Group. The top twenty submissions (as judged by readers from the community at large) are published in the anthology; of these, the top three are awarded impressive cash prizes ($1000 for First Place, $500 for Second Place, and $250 for Third Place).

PEN International New Voices Award

PEN Canada is now accepting submissions for the second PEN International New Voices Award. The annual award aims to encourage new writing and to provide a space where young, unpublished writers can submit their work. The winning writer, selected from the submissions of PEN centres around the world, will be published by PEN International and will receive a $1000 prize.

PEN Canada is now accepting submissions up to midnight April 3rd, 2014. Once these have been reviewed, an independent jury will review a shortlist and submit one entry to the international jury.

Submissions to PEN Canada must be in English. The chosen entry will be translated into PEN’s two other official languages (Spanish, French) and submitted to PEN International. All judging will be blind.

EVENT Magazine’s Annual Non-fiction Contest

EVENT, a literary journal showcasing fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, reviews and notes on writing by new and established writers from Canada and around the world, is currently in its fourth decade of publication. Writers are invited to submit manuscripts exploring the creative non-fiction form.

Ticket to Write Playwriting Contest

The Ticket to Write playwriting contest – launched as a Beatles-themed Festival – is now open for entries for the third year when the selected plays will be performed at Liverpool’s Unity Theatre on July 15 and 16.


The 2014 Festival has two new exciting changes:


Plays need not just have themes on The Beatles – they can include the wider Mersey Music scene of the 60s.


Plays entered should now be one-act 40 – 45 minute dramas rather than 15-minute offerings.


As usual the plays can be about the people, stories inspired by songs and song-titles or any genuine connection with The Beatles or the Mersey Scene of that period.


The winner gets a tasty £150 and it costs £20 to enter. Entries must be in by Friday, April 18.


All plays will be assessed anonymously by a theatre professional and three will go forward to be performed on both nights of the final when the audience vote will count towards the final result.


All entries will receive a considered written critique from the assessor who will receive £10 of the entry fee.

BOMB Magazine’s 2014 Poetry Contest

BOMB is excited to announce the 2014 Poetry Contest, judged by poet CAConrad.

2014 Debut-litzer Prizes

Late Night Library is now accepting submissions for the 2014 Debut-litzer Prizes in the categories of fiction and poetry. Winners will receive a cash award of $1,000 and a featured appearance on Late Night Conversation. Literary judges will discuss winning books on Late Night Debut.

Debut books first published in North America between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013 are eligible in fiction and poetry. Authors, agents, publicists, or publishers may submit entries. Deadline for submissions is April 30, 2014.

Trio House Press Book Awards: November 1-April 30

Trio House Press gives two awards annually: the Trio Award for First or Second Book for emerging poets, and the Louise Bogan Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence for a book of poems contributing in an innovative and distinct way to American poetry.


The Trio Award for First or Second Book includes $1,000, publication, and twenty books.  The Trio Award for First or Second Book is only open to poets with less than two books published.


The Louise Bogan Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence includes $1,000, publication, and twenty books.  The Louise Bogan Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence is open to ALL poets, regardless of publication history.


Each award winner receives $1000 and twenty copies of his or her book. Additionally, each winner must serve as a Collective Member of Trio House Press for twenty-four months after publication in order to assist with the press and bringing more Trio books into print.

The Malahat Review invites entries from Canadian translators, poets, and passionate readers to submit to a one-time translation contest of les poésies francophones du Canada.

The prizewill be awarded to the best translation of a poem in French, from Quebec or elsewhere in Canada, into English. The winning entry will be announced in late summer 2014, and will be published inAt Home in Translation.

Translations must be of published French-language poems that do not exceed 60 lines including stanza breaks. The winning translation must also succeed in English as a work of the imagination.

2014 Idaho Prize for Poetry

The Idaho Prize is an annual, national competition offering $1,000 plus publication by Lost Horse Press for a book-length poetry manuscript. Manuscripts are accepted for review before May 15 of each year, and on 15 August, a winner is announced. I want poets (and non-poets) to try their hands at remixing the poems in my Solving the World’s Problems collection. The inspiration comes from pop and dance music, which routinely offers remixed versions of the original songs. Some sound similar to the original; others are grand departures. For me, this challenge is a great opportunity to collaborate. I hope that’s an intrinsic benefit for you as well, but one lucky person will receive the extrinsic benefit of $500. The Fiction Desk Ghost Story Competition

The 2014 edition of our ghost story competition is now open!

Most of the stories we publish at The Fiction Desk are more or less realistic, but we try to stray outside that from time to time: some genre fiction should be part of any balanced reading diet. One genre that we particularly like to feature is the ghost story.

This year, our ghost story competition has a first prize of £500, and at least five finalists will each receive £100; the winner and finalists will also be published in an upcoming Fiction Desk anthology.

The Saturday Evening Post 2015 Great American Fiction Contest is underway!

In its nearly three centuries of existence, The Saturday Evening Post has published short fiction by a who’s who of American authors including F. Scott Fitzgerald; William Faulkner; Anne Tyler; Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.; Ray Bradbury; Louis L’Amour; Sinclair Lewis; Jack London; and Edgar Allan Poe. You have the opportunity to join our illustrious line-up by entering The Saturday Evening Post’s Third Annual Great American Fiction Contest.

The winning story will be published in the Jan/Feb 2015 edition of The Saturday Evening Post, and the author will receive a $500 payment. Five runners-up will each receive a $100 cash payment and will also have their stories published online.

New Writers Award

The New Writers Award is sponsored by the thirteen members of the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) to recognize newly published writers and introduce the best among them to students and faculty on GLCA campuses. Judges are professors of literature and writers in residence at GLCA colleges.

Since 1970, an award is made each year for a first published volume of poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. Each award winner has the opportunity to tour the thirteen colleges giving readings, meeting students and faculty, and leading discussions or classes.

Although primarily known as an educationist and a media critic, Neil Postman was, at his core, a “noticer”—and he particularly noticed what we do with metaphor and how metaphor shapes and creates our cognitive world. Postman maintained that words (and words, in truth, are metaphors) are as much the driver of reality as they are the vehicle. Consequently, metaphor was not a subject to be relegated and limited to high school poetry units wherein a teacher drones on about the difference between “like” and “as” and considers the job finished. For Postman, the study of metaphor was unending and metaphors were as crucial as they were omnipresent; they served to give form to and dictate experience.

In honor and remembrance of Neil Postman, who died on October 5, 2003, we have established the Neil Postman Award for Metaphor. The motivation for the award is simple and two-fold: To reward a given writer for his or her use of metaphor, and to celebrate (and hopefully propagate) Postman’s work and the typographical mind.

Each spring the editors will choose one poem from all of the submissions received by Rattle during the previous year. The author of the chosen poem will receive $500. As an extension of the Nonfiction Authors Association, we are committed to honoring excellence in nonfiction books and welcome submissions by self-published and traditionally published authors alike, in both print and ebook formats. Publishers are also welcome to submit books for award consideration.

About the Nonfiction Book Awards

Our program honors books year-round so you can submit your entry at any time. Books are not judged against competing titles, but are reviewed by our judges based on a scoring system that evaluates the quality of the writing and production of the book (editing, design and other details). A book can receive a bronze, silver or gold award provided the final evaluation score qualifies. As with other awards programs, not all books receive an award, but many do.

Winning a Nonfiction Book Award is like adding a seal of approval to your book. It tells readers and media professionals that you have a high quality book worth reading!

The Creative Nonfiction Collective Society’s annual conference will be held May 2-4, 2014 at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel in Calgary. The 10th anniversary conference promises a weekend jam-packed with literary nonfiction. Highlights include:

The Indigenous Writing Program is a unique opportunity for writers to develop their writing and storytelling voices amidst a vibrant community of renowned faculty and fellow writers. It offers an extended period of writing time: an intensive two-week residency at The Banff Centre followed by 10 weeks working online from your own home or work space. Writers receive invaluable one-on-one editorial feedback with outstanding faculty during the residency, and continue working online with a mentor-editor throughout the 10 weeks off campus.

ALONNISOS is a jewel of an island situated in the northwest of the Aegean Sea. It belongs to the Northern Sporadic group of islands. The harbor spills into a small bay with clear turquoise waters, surrounded by steep, ochre-yellow cliffs. Alonnisos has been designated as one of the top eco-islands of Europe. Swim in its crystal clear waters or hike old donkey paths kept open for nature lovers. Explore the natural beaches and travel into the hilly countryside where gentle, green hills converge with deep ravines. View the island as one large botanical garden. Surround yourself with dramatic views from the top of Chora – Old Town – and other highpoints on the island. Return to your private terrace and breathe in the calm of the environment.

You will arrive by Flying Dolphin hydrofoil or ferry to the lively port and main village of Patitiri. Most of the islands’ 2,900 permanent inhabitants live in this area. Gladstone Library Writer in Residence Programme for 2015: OPEN NOW!

Gladstone’s Library’s immensely successful Writer in Residence programme is now seeking submissions for residencies to take place in 2015. There will be four residencies offered in 2015. Each of the winning writers will be awarded a full month’s residency in the wonderfully creative atmosphere of Gladstone’s Library. During that month, each writer will publish two blogs about their stay, run a one-day workshop on the craft of creative writing, and host an evening event where they talk about any aspect of their writing life. Each residency comes with full board and lodging, travel expenses within the UK and a stipend of £100 per week. Previous judges of the prize include Damian Barr, Stella Duffy, and Jessica Fellowes. The 2015 judges are Vanessa Gebbie, Charles Gladstone, Katrina Naomi and Sarah Waters.

Now in its fourth year, the prize was established by Gladstone’s Library in association with Damian Barr (saloniere and author of Maggie and Me) to explore and define liberal values in the twenty-first century. As the Library’s Warden, Peter Francis, points out, ‘we are committed to maintaining Gladstone’s legacy of engagement with social, moral, and spiritual questions, by helping people reflect more deeply on the questions that concern them: this scheme is an extension of that mission’.

Artist Residency

A different kind of Artists’ Colony in Costa Rica

Open Call to writers and artists of all disciplines worldwide, emerging or established. Currently accepting applications for spring and summer of 2014. If making plans on shorter notice space may or may not be available, so please inquire first:


Three residencies are offered per year, in the spring, summer and 
fall. Up to four artists and a curator or a writer may participate 
in each residence, eight weeks for the artists, four weeks for the 
curator or the writer. Curators and writers receive a $572 stipend 
and free lodging for the four-week period of the residence. A $260 
writer’s fee will also be paid for texts on the residency produced 
for publication by Est-Nord-Est (250 words per artist). Curators and 
writers have access to an individual studio space, documentation on 
the artists, certain electronic equipment, logistical support… and 
a bicycle. Location Quebec.

ISLAND Hill House Artist Residency Program

Hill House Residency supports talented emerging songwriters, writers at all stages of their career and non-studio artists (see a more complete definition below) with a two, three or four week stay in a semi-secluded log cabin near East Jordan, Michigan. It includes a well-stocked kitchen, a selection of instruments and some basic recording gear, as well as opportunities for community exchange through performance, readings and workshops (only at your request, of course). The emerging musician residency also offers a small stipend to aid in your professional development.

Artists age 21 and older from anywhere in the world may apply. Solo artists as well as collaborating teams of up to four people may apply.

The residency lasts a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of four weeks.

There is a $25 application fee. This fee is per application period. Applying for an entire year will cost $50. While there is no additional cost to you, you will still need money for incidentals, materials and transportation to and from the residency. Also consider indirect costs: time away from your job and paying bills at home while you are in residence.

Osage Arts Community Residency

Osage Arts Community is a place that provides temporary time, space, and support for the creation of new work in a retreat format. These creative residencies are generally anywhere from one week to one year but average around six months. OAC serves creative people of all kinds – visual artists, composers, poets, fiction and nonfiction writers.

OAC is located on a 152-acre farm in an isolated rural mountainside setting in Central Missouri bordered by ¾ of a mile of the Gasconade River. We provide a solitary retreat to those working alone, as well as welcoming collaborative teams, offering a living space and a country environment in addition to workspace to emerging and mid-career artists.

We are committed to a unified belief in the creative process, and we support this by offering dedicated time and space for the creation of new work.

Red Gate Residency

Red Gate Residency was founded in 2001, by the leading art gallery in China and has since been committed to the promotion of multicultural art dialogue within an immersion setting. Each year, they host over 70 artists from all over the world in the residency. In order to provide artists-in-residence with abundant opportunities to explore the local art scene, they also cooperate with art spaces and projects in Beijing and coordinate exhibitions and activities.

Eligible Applicants

There is no limitation by medium nor by nationality. We are open to multicultural and cross-disiplinary exchange. We work with artists who can organize their own funds and or have received grants to cover their residency.

Application Process

We ask that all applicants apply using our online application form. Portfolio and brief bigography are required. Applicants also need to outline their residency objectives. 

The length of residencies range from 1 month to 6 months (we prefer to take bookings by the month). Applications are received on a rolling basis. Although at times we may have last minute space available, our facilities commonly fill six months in advance so we encourage an early application.


The winner will be invited to attend the Salt Cay Writers Retreat with all program and tuition fees covered. Takes place in the Bahamas. While the Salt Cay Writers Retreat curriculum is particularly suited for advanced fiction writers, memoirists, and narrative non-fiction writers, any author who wishes to take their writing to the next level is welcome for a memorable week of writing and instruction October 20-25.

This program assists professional writers with the writing of specific 
creative projects. Awards are available for projects in the genres of 
drama, fiction, juvenile, non-fiction and poetry.

These grants contribute to travel costs associated with participation in professional and career development activities in order for applicants to network, share knowledge, gain skills in specific arts practices and engage in dialogue about equity in the arts. No deadline. You may apply for one of the following fixed amounts to help cover your travel costs, based on excursion fares: $500, $750, $1,000, $1,500, $2,000 or $2,500. However, the two highest amounts ($2,000 and $2,500) are available only if you are traveling to or from northern Canada or to international destinations other than the United States and Europe. These grants cannot be used for travel that occurs before the date that the application is submitted. You might not be awarded the full amount requested.

fans. Create your project, its financing goal and deadline. If the 
financing goal is met or exceeded by deadline, all contributions are

IndieGoGo offers anyone with an idea — creative, cause-related, 
entrepreneurial — the tools to build a campaign and raise money.

website. Unlike many crowdfunding sites, you keep all the money you

Kickstarter is an online crowdfunding platform for creative projects ranging from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. If you’re currently seeking funding for a project you want to pursue at The Banff Centre, we want you to join us on Kickstarter. Online Writing Classes is a writing site founded in 2000.

On this writing community all posts receive feedback from writers and readers. Feedback includes a detailed comment on the posted work and a rating. The site uses a six star ratings scale with “1” being the worst and “6” being the best.

Writers are ranked based on the feedback they receive. Separate rankings are available for Poets, Novelists, Short Works (short stories and essays) and Script Writers (television and other forms of screenplays). Trophies are rewarded to the top five writers in each of the individual rankings at the end of the year.

The site recognizes writing with “Recognized”, “All Time Best” and “Seal of Quality” levels. Each level is more difficult to receive with the final level determined by the Seal of Quality committee. The committee is made up of published authors and stand-out reviewers. They offer feedback to help writers get published.

The site features free writing contests with cash prizes. Site members also have the ability to create their own contests to challenge other writers to write about a specific topic or a specific form of writing (such as writing using specific poetry format).

The welcome page includes featured writing. It also includes writing that has been well received in the past 24 hours.

Each day over 200 stories and poems are posted. Over 7,000 comments are written on the writing posted daily. Writers keep full copyright to their posted work.


Peerbackers is for business owners to raise capital from their peers — 
in small increments — in exchange for tangible rewards. Create a 
personal and venture profile. Share your story through social media 
share buttons on your project page. Once your campaign is launched, 
send updates on your progress. If you reach at least 80 percent of your 
funding goal by deadline, your funding is released to you. Peerbackers 
charges a 5 percent fee, in addition to third party processing fees.

In its 2011-16 Strategic Plan, the Council identified public engagement in the arts as a strategic theme that infuses all of its work. We hope to broaden and enhance the public conversation about this topic and use this discussion to inform the development of future Council activities.

Goose Lane Editions specializes in Canadian literary fiction and poetry, and in creative non-fiction on subjects such as art, history, politics, biography, travel, nature, popular culture, and the big ideas of our time. We are principally interested in submissions from Canadian writers. We only consider submissions from outside of Canada if the author is Canadian and if the book has extraordinary interest to Canadian readers. We do not publish books for children or young adults, personal memoirs, how-to books, mystery novels, fictional crime stories or works of science fiction. We do publish books with a distinctive flair and a clear, resounding voice, and vision. We are interested in books that take the reader on an original journey that fascinates, resonates, and captivates.

Peachtree does not publish historical novels (except children’s/young adult), science fiction, fantasy, romance, westerns, horror, poetry, short stories, plays, business, scientific or technical reference, or books intended specifically as textbooks.
