One of my creative writing students at the City Centre Community School wrote this poem for International Women’s Day and I want to share it with you all!
when I think about
how we should be
spurring each other on
women friends
comrades
in the struggle
to be heard
it takes my breath away
because we waste time
effort and energy
fighting each other
instead of the forces
in place
to shut us down
and push us aside
stealing and clawing
and trying to take
from the other
what is not ours
anyway
getting us off track
trying to win affections
of fickle men
as if they are somehow
more important
than being true to
ourselves
and our kind
lies
that spoil the vine
