BOOK(CLUBB)ED Event, Workshop, Reading and Book Launch with Nova Scotia Author, Christy Ann Conlin.
“The PEI public is invited to an open BOOK(CLUBB)ED event with Heave author, Christy Ann Conlin, on May 20, 2011—followed by a workshop and reading on May 21.
Sponsored by the Prince Edward Island Writers’ Guild, Random House & DB Brickhouse, organized by Mary Lou Griffin-Jenkins and Bonnie Stewart, the informal and lively book discussion will take place from 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Friday May 20th in the loft space at the top of DB Brickhouse (the former Off Broadway). Christy Ann Conlin will reign queen supreme at a convening of PEI readers of her national bestselling novel, Heave. All are welcome. The evening will be one of good company and good stories.
About Heave’s Serrie Sullivan:
“Bursting with wonder and delicate despair, Serrie Sullivan longs for the world, but she’s trapped, just like Dorothy in Oz. Serrie’s got a nasty secret. It’s festering inside her, because in the gothic Annapolis Valley, hey, that’s what you do—you never show and you never, ever tell.” (Random House)
About Heave
“Heave is simply a marvellous book.” “Heave is a powerful book”. “Conlin’s style is precise, the intensity often startling. She writes with a truthfulness that is passionate.” — Michelle Berry, Globe and Mail
Christy-Ann has a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and is an online instructor for the University of Toronto. Her memoir writing has been published in numerous anthologies, and magazines, and her radio documentary memoirs have been broadcast on CBC Radio. Christy-Ann’s young adult novel, Dead Time, (which she will be reading from at her book launch and reading on May 21) was published in January 2011, and her second adult novel, Listening to the Island will be published in 2013.
Hot on the heels of what is expected to be a very lively Friday evening event, Christy Ann is giving a workshop Saturday morning. Part of the PEI Writers’ Guild Workshop Series, funded in part by the Department of Tourism and Culture, the workshop “Introduction to Memoir & Life-Writing with Christy Ann Conlin” will be held between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on May 21 at the UPEI Faculty Lounge, Main Building. Morning refreshments will be provided, and fees are $20.00 for PEI Writers’ Guild members, $30.00 for non-members, and $15.00 for students. Email peiwritersguild@gmail.com to register for the workshop. Spaces are limited.
To wrap up this two-day literary feast, on Saturday May 21, beginning at 7:30 in the UPEI Faculty Lounge, Christy Ann will read from her new (dark and not for wee ones) YA novel Dead Time. She will be joined by Nova Scotia writer Kate Inglis (author of sweetsalty.com and The Dread Crew), blogger and writer Bonnie Stewart (cribchronicles.com and Best Women’s Travel Writing 2011), and Island poet Yvette Doucette. It is sure to be an amazing night of spirited performance. Books will be for sale by the Bookmark. Refreshments will be served. Come and join the party.
