The Malahat Review’s writing contests provide opportunities for writers to have their best work read around the world in one of North America’s finest literary journals.
Many Malahat contest winners have gone on to be recognized by the National Magazine Awards, the Western Magazine Awards, the McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize, and the Best Canadian Poetry in English.

Novella Prize / Long Poem Prize
Prize money: Up to $2000
Entries due every February 1 (emailed or postmarked)
The two oldest and most prestigious contests that The Malahat Review offers, the Novella Prize and Long Poem Prize alternate in even and odd years respectively, with a single prize of $1500 in the former and two prizes of $1000 each awarded in the latter. No matter the genre, the winning entrie(s) appear(s) in the Summer issue.
Far Horizons Awards
Prize money: $1000
Entries due every May 1 (emailed or postmarked)
As a complement to the Novella and Long Poem prizes, the Far Horizons Awards are short-form contests, with the Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction given during odd years and the Far Horizons Award for Poetry in even. Only open to writers who have yet to publish in book form for the genre in question. Winning entries appear in the Autumn issue.
Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize
Prize money: $1000
Entries due every August 1 (emailed or postmarked)
To nurture The Malahat Review’s newest genre, the Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize was established in 2007. The winning entry appears in the Winter issue.
Open Season Awards
Prize money (recent increase): $4500 (up from $3000)
Entries due every November 1 (emailed or postmarked)
Writers are encouraged to enter The Malahat Review’s newest contest in three categories: poetry, fiction, and/or creative nonfiction. Winning entries are published in the Spring issue.
